The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a sweeping effort to address the security of artificial intelligence (AI), establishing seven new national research institutes to harness opportunities and mitigate risks associated with emerging AI technologies.

The AI Institute for Agent-based Cyber Threat Intelligence and Operation (ACTION) will be headquartered at UC Santa Barbara and aims to focus on using AI to protect against complex and constantly developing cybersecurity threats.

Computer scientist Dawn Song, who spoke at the 2020 Women in Tech Symposium co-sponsored by CITRIS, will lead the Berkeley team’s efforts. Four CITRIS researchers — Stuart Russell, Pieter Abbeel, David Wagner and Bin Yu — will join her as members of the executive committee.
