Building Services supports the day-to-day operation, safety, and upkeep of Sutardja Dai Hall in coordination with campus partners. Our goal is to maintain a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for building occupants, researchers, students, and event attendees.
Service Requests
For building-related issues or general facilities questions, please contact sdhfacilities@berkeley.edu.
When submitting a request, please include:
- Location (room number or area)
- Description of the issue or request
- Date and time (if event-related)
- Your name and contact information
Requests are prioritized based on urgency, safety impact, and available resources.
Custodial Services
PPCS Custodial Services provides general building services at this time. Here are suggestions for maintaining your regular service:
- Do not leave trash or containers in the hallway. The hallways should be clear at all times in case of an emergency. This includes all stairwells and exit areas.
- Do not use non-PPCS garbage bags. PPCS requires the use of black, beige, brown, or gray garbage bags. PPCS will not remove trash in clear, red, or orange bags.
- For general guidance on the disposal of hazardous material, consult the UC Berkeley EH&S Hazardous Waste Management website.
- Send special clean-up requests to Graham Hammond at ghammond@berkeley.edu.
Maintenance Emergencies
For facilities emergency issues at Sutardja Dai Hall, such as burst pipes or a condition where significant damage to the facility or personal injury may result, please call the UC Berkeley Facilities Services 24-hour maintenance helpline at (510) 642-1032. Please make sure to talk to a staff member directly.
Defibrillators and First-aid Kits
There are two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in Sutardja Dai Hall. One is located on the wall in the third-floor lobby next to the passenger elevators, and the other is mounted on the wall in the sixth-floor lobby outside Room 652. These devices are to be used in case of a cardiac emergency only, and an alarm will sound when the door is opened. Dial 911 from a building phone or (510) 642-3333 from a cell phone before using an AED. Instructions are provided in the packet attached to the device.
First-aid kits are located in the kitchen pantries on each floor and in the Shipping and Receiving Office on the second floor. A bloodborne pathogen clean-up kit is also provided with each first-aid kit to mitigate the spread of infections.
Environment, Health and Safety Resources
For resources related to chemical waste management, reporting hazardous conditions and more, please see the UC Berkeley Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) website.
For more information during a campus emergency, visit the UC Berkeley Campus Emergency Information webpage.
Protection of Equipment and Personal Valuables
UCPD reports that most crimes on campus happen between 1–5 p.m., Monday through Friday, because criminals can more easily blend in with crowds of people or “hide in plain sight.” Help prevent theft by securing all your valuables and avoiding leaving areas unsecured. Please make sure that doors close securely behind you. Do not prop doors open, especially in unoccupied areas.
You can also request furniture keys to lock your desk drawers or overhead cabinets. Please specify your floor number and your desk number.
Other Steps To Prevent Theft:
- Do not open doors for people you do not know. Promptly close the door behind you and do not allow people to follow you in the building (aka “tailgate”). Tell them to contact sdhfacilities@berkeley.edu or the Facilities Office (Room 330A) to inquire about building access.
- Report any lost keys or card keys to Facilities Office staff immediately. Card keys can be turned off in minutes to prevent unauthorized building or room access.
- Turn in any keys found to the Facilities Office or CITRIS Reception desk inside the CITRIS Tech Museum.
- Do not label keys with the area or room numbers that they operate.
- Do not leave metal keys or card keys lying around, especially in public areas.
- Do not loan keys to anyone.
- Make sure to collect keys from all departing students or employees. All keys must be returned to inventory in the Facilities Office immediately.
Bicycles and Scooters
Bicycles should not be kept in labs or offices. Bicycle racks are located on the east and west sides of the building for locking up bikes outside.
In accordance with UC Berkeley campus safety, fire, and accessibility requirements, electric scooters and other personal electric mobility devices are not permitted inside Sutardja Dai Hall. These devices may not be ridden, parked, stored, or charged anywhere within the building. Lithium-ion batteries present a potential fire risk, and improperly stored devices can obstruct required paths of travel and emergency egress. To maintain a safe and accessible environment for all occupants, scooters must be secured outdoors at designated exterior bike racks or approved locations.
