WattTime, a fall 2014 CITRIS Foundry venture, has developed one of Time magazine’s 2025 best inventions: the Automated Emissions Reduction (AER) system.

AER tracks real-time emissions generated by the electric grid, identifying when it is pulling from the cleanest electricity sources. Connected devices, such as electric vehicles or smart thermostats, can then prioritize running during periods with low emissions. WattTime currently monitors power use in 210 countries.
