Combating Alzheimer’s with light
A CITRIS Invention Lab “Superuser” turned entrepreneur, Mai Nguyen recalls when she first came into the makerspace in 2014 without any hands-on experience: “At first I thought, ‘This is intimidating, I don’t know what I’m doing at all’… But my entire career changed into a different direction based on the experience I had at CITRIS.”
Creating devices to improve cancer screening
Julia Kramer, a mechanical engineering Ph.D. student, has been working at the CITRIS Invention Lab for three years to develop low-cost training devices to help healthcare providers in Ghana learn to screen for cervical cancer. “There have been challenges in developing the device, such as how to make device assembly as repeatable and easy as possible…It’s those types of questions that the folks in the Invention Lab have been really helpful in thinking through,” says Julia.
