The UC Davis College of Engineering held its annual Celebration of Faculty Excellence this week, and CITRIS principal investigators (PIs) saw numerous honors.

Saif Islam, campus director of CITRIS at UC Davis, received the Outstanding Senior Research Faculty Award. Islam is recognized as a world-class researcher whose innovations in nanotechnologies have transformed the landscape of optical communication and device manufacturing. He holds 42 patents, whose broad-ranging applications include nano- and optoelectronics, ultra-fast data communication, quantum sensing, computing, disease sensing and prevention, and energy harvesting and storage. Most recently, Islam has been leading an interdisciplinary team of researchers to create innovative, fluorescence lifetime imaging for agricultural uses in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Library.

He said of the distinction, “I express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for the great honor. … I accept this recognition as a call to action.”

Other CITRIS PIs recognized at the ceremony included John Owens (Outstanding Mid-Career Research Faculty Award), Stavros Vougioukas (Excellence in Teaching Award), and Katerina Ziotopoulou (Excellence in Teaching Award).
