Nonnecke talks connected cars and cybersecurity on VOA

Brandie Nonnecke, director of the CITRIS Policy Lab, joined the Voice of America International Edition podcast to discuss cybersecurity in the rising U.S. market for autonomous vehicles. 

Increasingly interconnected devices are susceptible to malware and hacking. The U.S. Department of Commerce is seeking to ban the sale of autonomous vehicles that are equipped with certain foreign hardware and software, citing national security and the safety of drivers as critical concerns. Nonnecke spoke on potential areas of risk for consumers, including vehicle interactions with the electrical grid and other cars on the road. 

“As these vehicles become more sophisticated in their technology and we continue to see cities investing in smart city technology, we’re going to see vehicles communicating a lot more with infrastructure around them.”
