CITRIS and the Banatao Institute is pleased to welcome Katherine “Kathy” Kim as managing director and senior principal researcher for CITRIS Health. Kim will coordinate health technology initiatives across the four CITRIS campuses and help advance research and innovation in digital health, AI and community-engaged technology.

Kim brings more than 30 years of experience in health care, aging and technology as a health informatics researcher, health care leader and entrepreneur. A consumer health informaticist, her research uses user-centered design and participatory methods to develop technologies that support collaboration and shared decision-making among patients, caregivers and clinicians. Her work has addressed diabetes, hypertension, women’s health, cancer and other areas of care.

“We are delighted to have Kathy with us as we continue to strengthen our work in AI and health technology,” said CITRIS Director Alex Bayen. “Her extensive experience in digital health, AI, startups and research will be a tremendous asset.”

Most recently, Kim founded and served as CEO of Health Tequity, a technology platform for community-wide care coordination based on work she developed as a CITRIS Health-affiliated researcher. She has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than 20 grants and is an elected fellow of both the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics and the American Medical Informatics Association.

Kim is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the UC Davis School of Medicine and board chair-elect of the Archstone Foundation, which works to improve the health and well-being of older adults. She previously founded other health technology startups and held senior positions at Oracle and MITRE Corporation.

Kim earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, an MPH and MBA from UC Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in nursing science and health care leadership from UC Davis.

Welcome to CITRIS, Kathy!
