Eric Paulos, director and co-founder of the CITRIS Invention Lab and professor at the UC Berkeley college of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS), was inducted into the ACM SIGCHI Academy by the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) in recognition of his pioneering work in human-computer interaction and technology prototyping.

The SIGCHI Academy is an honorary group recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of human-computer interaction. Selection is based on cumulative impact, including research and innovation, influence on others’ work, and active participation in ACM SIGCHI. Inductees receive a lifetime invitation to the annual SIGCHI awards banquet.

In addition to his role in EECS, Paulos is the faculty director of the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at UC Berkeley, founder and director of the Hybrid Ecologies Lab and the founding director of the UC Berkeley Master of Design (MDes) program, among other roles. His work includes developing some of the first internet telepresence robots, creating an early smartwatch-based haptic messaging device, coining the term “urban computing,” and building one of the first citizen-science air quality sensors integrated into mobile phones.
