WattTime, a venture in the 2014 CITRIS Foundry cohort, has partnered with Toyota and Lexus to implement a power grid emissions signal that allows electric vehicle (EV) drivers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and human health impacts caused by their vehicles.
The new technology, known as the ECO Charging feature, allows users who own a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) or a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) to identify low-emission charging times.
“The key is knowing which power plants will respond based on when people use electricity,” said Gavin McCormick, founder and executive director of WattTime. “Now, Toyota and Lexus EV owners can use their app to prioritize charging during moments that better protect people’s lungs.”
