Barbato named a UC Davis Innovator of the Year

Michele Barbato, director of the CITRIS Climate initiative, has been named a 2023 UC Davis Innovator of the Year.

Barbato was recognized for his work in nature-based solutions for climate-resilient earthen construction, with noted advancements in material properties, construction techniques, and design and construction standards for earthen masonry. He developed a technology that utilizes adobe, which is fire resistant, to build affordable and sustainable houses, a potentially transformative venture for the homebuilding industry.

The award program, run by the UC Davis Office of Research, recognizes faculty, staff or teams whose innovative or entrepreneurial activities have either had or have a very strong potential to make a significant measurable impact. Recipients receive $10,000 to advance their research or engage in community efforts.
