CITRIS researcher Sayeef Salahuddin, the TSMC Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley, has been awarded the 2026 James C. McGroddy Prize for New Materials from the American Physical Society (APS) for “for the discovery of ferroelectricity in ultra thin hafnium based oxides and their implementation in microelectronic devices.”

Salahuddin shares the prize with Thomas Mikolajick. It is based on their work at NaMlab gGmbH, an organization that researches dielectrics for semiconductor devices, reconfigurable devices and energy efficiency devices to find solutions to challenges related to climate change, mobility and digitalization.

“It is my profound honor to share the James McGroddy Prize from the American Physical Society with Thomas Mikolajick,” Salahuddin said. “My deepest gratitude to many generations of Berkeley students and postdocs who made it happen.”

Salahuddin is a fellow of IEEE and the APS.
