Social Entrepreneur Center at UCSC

Professor James Davis received a CITRIS Seed Funded grant to plan a large social entrepreneurship program at UC Santa Cruz. Currently, students are educated primarily in academic silos in which they learn about only one of the necessary areas to work in this space: engineering, business, or social causes. Very few students are exposed to all three. CITRIS researchers have worked to:

  • Establish a Social Entrepreneurship minor program for undergraduates. Ultimately, there will be both an undergraduate major and a graduate program.
  • Establish a Business Plan Competition.  In the first year, 4 out of 7 finalist teams were pitching business plans meant to address a pressing social need.
