CITRIS Tech Policy is seeking an advanced student in a UC Berkeley JD, JSD, joint MPP/JD or Ph.D. program to play a leadership role in a new course where graduate students across four campuses and multiple disciplines will work in teams to draft policy concepts for potential use by California state legislators.
The legislative research lead will be responsible for conducting detailed policy and legal research before the course begins to determine what topics students will work on during the course. Throughout the course, the researcher will provide detailed supervision to ensure that team output is rooted in thoughtful and detailed legal research and analysis. Key tasks will include:
- reviewing relevant legal scholarship related to these proposals as well as theoretical literature about possible directions for future legislation
- reviewing the status of relevant litigation that could inspire legislative efforts
- interviewing and corresponding directly with legislators and their staff in Sacramento
- joining students and faculty in calls with key external partners for the class
Desired skills include:
- Successful completion of at least one year and preferably two years of law school, with coursework relevant to technology policy
- Relevant previous work experience including internships or policy work before entering law school
- Capacity to explain complex legal concepts to people from a variety of backgrounds
- Professional experience working in a fast-paced workplace managing multiple, complex policy or legal projects at once
The role will required 15–20 hours per week from September 2025 through March 2026, with an hourly wage of $30. The first review date is Aug. 29, and the position will remain open until filled.
