Abstract:
There has been some debate regarding whether we are currently experiencing a nuclear energy renaissance. There are currently 10 contracts to build the Westinghouse AP1000: 4 in China and 6 in the US. This success is a result of plant design simplicity which leverages passive safety systems and extensive modularization, moderate power output (1100MW) of the AP1000, as well as the maturity of the licensing review process. I will discuss the important features of the system’s intelligent design process.

Biography:
Ed Cummins has spent his 32‐year Westinghouse career in a variety of assignments in project management, engineering management and new plant design. He has served as department head for nuclear and fossil fueled electrical generation simplicity which leverages plants, and became General Manager of the New Plant Projects Division, where space he implemented new nuclear plant projects. He is currently Vice President, Nuclear Power Plant Regulatory Affairs and Standardization, responsible for the licensing and commercialization of the AP1000 plant, designed to be competitive with natural gas fired combined cycle plants.
