Gavin McCormick, CEO of 2014 CITRIS Foundry venture WattTime, spoke to the BBC about the work his organization is doing to help make the electrical grid more resilient.
Growing worldwide electricity demand, coupled with broad shifts toward renewable energy sources, has created a double-edged challenge when it comes to creating a capable power infrastructure to match. In order to ensure reliable grids, WattTime is developing AI software that predicts electricity supply and demand in a given area, information that can signal large grid batteries that store spare energy when to charge and discharge.
By analyzing weather and electricity usage patterns, the technology will aid in directing the flow of surplus energy so power grids are equipped to combat power outages and peak usage times.
