ABSTRACT:

Structural health monitoring (SHM) for large scale bridges has been practiced over 10 years in Hong Kong, The SHM system for the new Stonecutters Bridge incorporates 1,505 sensors. This talk presents the evolution of SHM systems for large‐scale bridges in Hong Kong and the extension of SHM practice from bridge structures to high‐rise structures, and gives new insights into the integration of SHM and renewable  energy technologies, targeting at a new generation of SHM systems within a more general framework of mechatronics.

BIO:

Dr. Y.Q. Ni received his Ph.D. degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Ni has been heavily involved in research assisting the Hong Kong Government Highways Department to implement and operate SHM systems on the large‐scale bridges in Hong Kong. He has also acted as a lead consultant in developing SHM  systems for a number of landmark structures, including the design of SHM systems for the cable‐stayed Sutong Bridge with a main span of 1,088 m and the Guangzhou New TV Tower with a height of 610 m.
