Departmental Overview
The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Banatao Institute, citris-uc.org, is one of four visionary Institutes for Science and Innovation at the University of California established by Governor Gray Davis in 2000 to address large-scale societal problems through interdisciplinary research and new market applications.
For nearly 20 years, CITRIS has been advancing technology for the public good in such areas as sustainable energy; water and transportation systems; robotics and artificial intelligence; civic engagement; and health care. CITRIS supports faculty researchers and students from four UC campuses – Berkeley, Davis, Santa Cruz and Merced – through seed-grant funding, as well as staff, space and postdoc support for research activities. CITRIS offers laboratories and makerspaces, houses the CITRIS Foundry accelerator (citrisfoundry.org), and curates signature events throughout the year designed to foster dialogue in the tech community and beyond.

The Director of the CITRIS Policy Lab independently oversees a moderately sized academic or research program and represents the program to outside organizations. Oversees all administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for program. Designs and develops major program components, and administers the full range of the program’s operational requirements. Works with faculty on formulating short-term planning and procedures. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principle Investigator to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.
Responsibilities
30% Directs and administers the CITRIS Policy Lab and CITRIS Tech for Social Good Program with complete administrative and programmatic responsibility.
20% Assists in developing research, participates in professional conferences and provides public relations support to the CITRIS Policy Lab.
10% Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams.
10% Manages financial and HR resources of CITRIS Policy Lab and CITRIS Tech for Social Good Program.
10% Assesses program’s effectiveness, and recommends changes to program’s content, policies and procedures accordingly.
7.5% Facilitates efforts of various CITRIS-affiliated programs and UC departments, managers and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration among CITRIS Policy Lab researchers.
7.5% Participates in the program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of the CITRIS Policy Lab and CITRIS Tech for Social Good Program.
5% Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long term planning to ensure growth and success of CITRIS Policy Lab and CITRIS Tech for Social Good Program.
Required Qualifications
• Academic background and experience in Policy research as related to CITRIS.
• Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
• Advanced oral and written communication skills.
• Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
• Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
• Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
• Highly skilled fundraising experience.
• Demonstrated expertise with program building within academic institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Management and leadership experience in academic and/or government agencies and/or industry.
• Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of researchers (faculty, staff, students), sponsors, and collaborators.
