Job opportunities: Development and communications student assistants

Key operations teams at CITRIS’s headquarters at UC Berkeley are seeking student assistants for the 2023–24 academic year. The following positions are available in communications and development to currently enrolled UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate students:

Development Associate

Strengthen the CITRIS philanthropic community across CITRIS’s campuses and disciplines through research and creative support as part of the development team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with prospect research and the creation of materials for donors/funders (slide decks, proposals, impact reports, etc.)
  • Brainstorming and implementing plans with digital philanthropy
  • Helping curate CITRIS-wide donor engagement content to share with campus fundraiser network
  • Maintaining development files

Required qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a B.A., B.S., master’s or doctoral degree program at UC Berkeley, with availability for the entire academic year (through spring 2024, with the possibility for extension)
  • Strong writing skills and experience with graphic design (Canva preferred)
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to appropriately represent CITRIS when coordinating with staff, students and faculty
  • Experience with or desire to learn development and alumni engagement communication and practices
  • Interest in working within and supporting the growth of a tech innovation research institute
  • Strong analytical ability

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Airtable

The position will begin as early as June 2023 at 10–20 hours per week, and it is located at UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Dai Hall with the possibility of remote work. The pay rate is $20 per hour, and one position is available. Work-study eligibility is a plus but is not required.

Editorial Assistant

Gain communications experience in a multicampus, multidisciplinary research institute environment and grow your writing portfolio as part of CITRIS’s communications team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Database maintenance: Entering information about media mentions into the existing Airtable database with speed and accuracy. 
  • Writing and editing: Drafting content to highlight our news, research, people and programs. This may include interviewing and fact-checking. Web publishing may include WordPress content management system. Editorial style is based heavily on The Associated Press Stylebook.
  • Communications: Supporting team members as needed by performing digital communications, event coverage and other duties.

Required qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a B.A., B.S., master’s or doctoral degree program at UC Berkeley, with availability for the entire academic year (through spring 2024)
  • Excellent self-starter with strong task management and problem-solving skills
  • Experience writing or editing content for web, print and social media
  • Strong analytical ability: delves into analytics to improve processes; willingness to learn and research solutions independently and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and ability to appropriately represent CITRIS when coordinating with staff, students and faculty

Preferred qualifications:

  • Skill with editing and troubleshooting basic HTML and CSS
  • Experience with basic search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Experience editing images with Adobe Creative Suite or Canva
  • Experience with Airtable

The position will begin as early as July 2023 at 5–10 hours per week, and it is located at UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Dai Hall with the possibility of remote work. The pay rate is $18–$21 per hour, and one position is available. Work-study eligibility is a plus but is not required.

Fundraising Writer and Researcher

Work alongside experts and leaders across CITRIS’s four campuses to distill complex information into compelling stories as part of the development team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing and editing: Draft content to highlight our research and successes in donor/funder-facing materials, donor and funder proposals, donor appeals, and donor/executive presentations
  • Communications: Support team members as needed by performing donor communications, event coverage, event/meeting support and follow-up, and other duties
  • Research: Conduct donor and funder prospect research; learn about CITRIS’s project portfolio to match emerging research with donor interest

Required qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree program at UC Berkeley, preferably in journalism, communications or English, with availability for the entire academic year (through spring 2024, with the possibility for extension)
  • Strong writing and communication skills and ability to appropriately represent CITRIS when coordinating with staff, students and faculty
  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Experience with or desire to learn development and alumni engagement communication and practices
  • Interest in working within and supporting the growth of a tech innovation research institute

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working on grants/working on a development team
  • Experience writing and editing content in a science- or technology-related environment

The position will begin as early as June 2023 at 15–20 hours per week, and it is located at UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Dai Hall with the possibility of remote work. The pay rate is $25 per hour, and one position is available. Work-study eligibility is a plus but is not required.

Marketing Assistant

Join our team to contribute to website, email, print and social media campaigns to launch and promote programs and flagship events as part of CITRIS’s communications team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Web content: Produce landing pages, execute copy or layout revisions
  • Graphic design: Produce visual assets for websites, email campaigns, social media, print collateral, events and slide presentations. Includes logo and branded template updates
  • Email marketing: Produce email campaigns and surveys via Mailchimp. May also assist with building marketing lists.
  • Event marketing and logistical support: Assists at CITRIS events as needed (e.g., emails, registration, collateral, signage, during-event social media posting)
  • Special projects: Contribute to knowledge base, research tech solutions, build and maintain various databases

Required qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a B.A., B.S. or master’s degree program at UC Berkeley, with availability for the entire academic year (through spring 2024, with the possibility for extension)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time, research solutions independently and meet deadlines
  • Experience with WordPress or other web CMS
  • Experience with editing and troubleshooting basic HTML and CSS
  • Experience with graphic design, web design, and UX principles and practices
  • Expertise in Canva or Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) 
  • Excellent task management and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to appropriately represent CITRIS when coordinating with staff, students and faculty

Preferred qualifications

  • Passion for digital marketing and brand
  • Experience writing or editing content for websites 
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility requirements 
  • Experience with Airtable

The position will begin as early as June 2023 for a summer start with up to 20 hours per week; for a fall start, it begins in August 2023 with 10–15 hours per week. The position is located at UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Dai Hall with the possibility of remote work. The pay rate is $18–$21 per hour, and one position is available. Work-study eligibility is a plus but is not required.
