i4Energy Seminar: Simulating California’s High Renewables Future

  • April 9, 2010: 12:00pm – 1:00pm
  • Location: Banatao Auditorium, Sutardja Dai Hall, UC Berkeley

Udi Helman, Principal in the CAISO’s Markets and Infrastructure Development group

Abstract:
California ISO operates much of the California power grid.  The ISO works with federal regulators, State agencies and market participants to conduct grid planning, improve system operations, and adapt wholesale markets for energy and ancillary services in anticipation of achieving a 20% renewable portfolio standard (by about 2013) and then a 33% renewable portfolio standard by 2020.  This talk focuses on some simulation studies that are completed or underway to model system operations with alternative high renewables scenarios.  In particular, the ISO is working with the California Public Utilities Commission and others to evaluate 5 scenarios for 2020 that will be described, including how much ramping, load following and regulation service is required on the system as well as the impacts of renewables on production costs and carbon emissions.
