SUMMARY:CITRIS and BCNM Present: Trevor Paglen on Art\, AI and Psyops
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: You’ve Just Been F$%^#D by Psyops: UFOs\, Magic\, Electronic Warfare\, Mind Control\, Artificial Intelligence and the Death of the Internet \nSpeaker: Trevor Paglen\, Multidisciplinary Artist\, Filmmaker\, Investigator and Technologist \nFree and open to the public; no registration necessary. \nAbstract: As AI-generated content\, social media influence operations\, microtargeted advertising and ubiquitous surveillance have become the norm on the internet and in the market in general\, we have entered an era of PSYOP capitalism. This is an era of generated hallucinations and manipulations designed to transform each of us into a “targeted individual” through the manipulation of perception. This talk explores a history of secret military and intelligence programs that serve as antecedents to a phantasmagoric present. \nSpeaker Bio: Trevor Paglen (b. 1974) lives and works in New York\, New York. As an artist\, filmmaker\, investigator\, technologist and theorist\, Paglen asks questions around vision\, perception\, materiality and aesthetics. His wide-ranging oeuvre includes work on artificial intelligence and computer vision\, aerospace technology\, secrecy and conspiracy\, experimental landscapes\, speculative fiction\, nuclear histories\, notional archaeology\, psychological operations\, and the Weird. Paglen has photographed secret military bases from enormous distances\, tracked classified satellites and objects of unknown origin in earth orbit\, led underwater tours of internet infrastructure\, created a radioactive sculpture for a nuclear exclusion zone\, profiled an Air Force disinformation specialist\, built numerous AI and computer vision models\, performed with the Kronos Quartet\, written several books\, and launched two sculptures into space\, among other things. Ultimately\, Paglen poses the following question: How can we learn to see the world at a moment in time where accelerating technologies\, politics and cultures come up against the limits of reason and perception? \nAbout the Talk: Presented as a part of the UC Berkeley Center for New Media’s Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium. Co-sponsored by CITRIS and the Banatao Institute. \nImage courtesy of Trevor Paglen.

SUMMARY:CITRIS and ITS Present: Daniel Sperling on Transportation Policy
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: “Transforming Transportation: Bringing Science to Policy” \nSpeaker: Daniel Sperling\, Distinguished Blue Planet Prize Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science and Policy\, and Founding Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies\, UC Davis \nFree and open to the public; no registration necessary. Seating is first come\, first served.\nWatch Livestream on YouTube \nAbstract: Transportation is on the path to decarbonization\, led by the electrification of cars\, trucks and buses. However\, numerous questions remain. How much reduction in vehicle use is desired and possible? How might aviation and shipping be decarbonized? How might strategies differ between advanced industrial nations and the Global South? What more do we need to know and which strategies\, technologies and policies are most effective and most acceptable? \nSpeaker Bio: Daniel Sperling is the Distinguished Blue Planet Prize Professor of Engineering and Environmental Science and Policy and founding director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis. He held the transportation seat on the California Air Resources Board from 2007–23 and served as chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies in 2015–16. Among his many honors are induction into the National Academy of Engineering in 2022\, the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award for University Transportation Education and Research of the Council of University Transportation Centers; the 2018 Roy W. Crum Distinguished Service Award from TRB\, its highest research honor; and the 2013 Blue Planet Prize from the Asahi Glass Foundation Prize as “a pioneer in opening up new fields of study to create more efficient\, low-carbon\, and environmentally beneficial transportation systems.” He has served twice as lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, sharing 0.3 percent of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize; authored or co-authored over 250 technical papers and 13 books; and made one thousand public presentations. \nAbout the Talk: Co-sponsored by the UC Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS). \nAbout the Series: Charting New Paths illuminates challenges and opportunities in applying emerging innovations to combat climate change\, transform urban mobility\, improve public health and shape technology policy. Free and open to the public\, these seminars take place on Fridays from 3–4 p.m. PT in fall 2024. \nSign up to receive the latest news from CITRIS.

SUMMARY:Making the Most of Drone and Sensor Data: A Community Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Drones and remote sensors are now ubiquitous. Yet\, the data they collect are often siloed: they are not findable\, accessible\, searchable\, interoperable nor repeatable. This is perhaps a keystone challenge and one of the many barriers to sustained\, transformative and convergent scientific innovation using these data. \nAs part of the Leading the Change Collaboration Series\, CITRIS at UC Santa Cruz and partners are holding a one-day workshop at the UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley campus to address the challenges associated with the massive amount of data that are being collected by drones and other remote sensing platforms. \nThe agenda includes a keynote address by CITRIS Director Alexandre Bayen\, as well as panel sessions on drone mission planning\, remote sensor data collection\, field operations\, security and privacy\, and much more. UC Santa Cruz experts\, research partners from other UC campuses and industry representatives are all welcome. \nRegistration is required.
