SUMMARY:Berkeley Builds: Social Impact Designathon
DESCRIPTION:Berkeley Builds: Social Impact Designathon\nApril 30-May 1\nBanatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nRegister Now< \nInnovate\, Collaborate\, And Create For The Following Nonprofits:\nEver walk into a store and see products labeled “Fair Trade Certified”? Design for the international organization responsible for certifying and labeling products that impacts 1.5 million farmers worldwide. \nToday\, the United States is 5% of the world population but has 25% of the world’s prisoners. Root and Rebound combats mass incarceration by equipping people in reentry from prison and jail\, their family\, agencies\, and supporting nonprofit organizations\, with resources for successful reintegration. Support Root and Rebound in streamlining California’s reentry process. \nWhile nearly 7\,000 residents in the Berkeley area are registered with a physical or mental disability\, only 2\,000 of these residents have access to clinical services that are necessary for them to stay healthy. Work with Easy Does It to create products that can service the remaining 5\,000 Berkeley residents that go untreated every year. \nEvery 2 minutes\, somebody in the United States is a victim of sexual assault. Specifically\, college age women are 4 times more likely to be targets of sexual assault than anybody else. Design for BAWAR to join their mission of increasing access to education\, counseling\, and advocacy for Bay Area victims of all ages. \nHave you ever wanted to make a sustainable international impact or work on a global development project? Project RISHI works in a village called Bharog Baneri\, India to implement a variety of projects from educational empowerment to health. Design for Project RISHI to make an impact on a community over 7500 miles away from Berkeley\, CA!

SUMMARY:IoT & Sustainability: Practice\, Policy and Promise
DESCRIPTION:IoT & Sustainability: Practice\, Policy and Promise\nWhen: May 12 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm\, Reception to follow\nWhere: Banatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nRegister: http://iotandsustainability.eventbrite.com\nRegister Now \nThe “Internet of Things” (IoT) has become a buzzword for new technology platforms designed to monitor infrastructure and measure performance across complicated systems. Rapid global urbanization\, along with mounting concerns over use of natural resources\, make the application of IoT for cities and sustainability a promising nexus for innovation. \nThe Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Banatao Institute will host a symposium dedicated to exploring the promise of IoT platforms for managing energy\, water\, and transportation in the urban environment. The symposium will highlight emerging technology for smarter cities\, raise questions regarding privacy and security\, and address issues of data collection\, storage\, and interoperability. Leaders from academia\, industry\, and government will discuss technology-enabled opportunities to promote sustainability and business\, and how these exciting developments can be implemented to improve efficiency and civic health. CITRIS will present preliminary insights from a study of IoT for key sectors for urban planning and sustainability. \nWe hope you can join us! Please reach out to Brandie Nonnecke (nonnecke@citris-uc.org) with any questions.
