SUMMARY:BIDS Data Science Lecture: Hate speech\, algorithms\, and digital connectivity
DESCRIPTION:The Online Hate Index (OHI) is a research partnership between UC Berkeley’s D-Lab and Google Jigsaw that seeks to improve society’s understanding of online hate speech (from sources such as YouTube\, Reddit\, Twitter and other social media sites)\, including its prevalence over time\, variation across regions and demographics\, our ability to measure it through crowdsourcing and algorithms\, and how to influence it through historical or future interventions. Through a combination of citizen science and machine learning\, the team is developing a nuanced measurement methodology that decomposes hate speech into various constituent components\, enabling it to be transformed into a continuous “hate speech scale\,” making it easier to rate\, evaluate and understand than a single omnibus question (i.e. “is this comment hate speech?”). \nThe project is setting new standards for the data science of hate speech\, with goals to 1) establish a theoretically-grounded definition of hate speech inclusive of research/policies/practice\, 2) develop and apply a multi-component labeling instrument\, 3) create a new crowdsourcing tool to scalably label comments\, 4) curate an open\, reliable multi-platform labeled hate speech corpus\, 5) grow existing data and tool repositories within principles of replicable and reproducible research\, enabling greater transparency and collaboration\, 6) create new knowledge through ethical online experimentation (and citizen science)\, and 7) refine AI models. The research team includes Geoff Bacon (Linguistics Ph.D. candidate); Nora Broege (Postdoc at Rutgers University); Chris Kennedy (Biostatistics Ph.D. student\, BIDS Fellow); and Alexander Sahn (Political Science Ph.D. candidate). \nUltimately\, we seek to understand the causal mechanisms for intervention and evaluation\, while defending free speech. A new open-source platform – to be used by the Anti-Defamation League and other advocacy organizations – will make these resources (along with policy recommendations) available to educate the public and grow the larger data science / citizen science community. \nBIDS Data Science Lectures are open to the entire campus community. \nEvent Type: Lecture\nDate: Wednesday\, May 08\, 2019\nTime: 3 – 4 p.m.\nOn Campus Location: Doe Library\nRoom Name/Number: 190\nSponsor: Berkeley Institute for Data Science

SUMMARY:Science Lecture – Black Holes\, Big and Small- A laser-guided adaptive optics view
DESCRIPTION:Black holes come in at least two varieties. Supermassive black holes lay at the centers of galaxies and\, while not theoretically predicted\, have been definitively proven to exist using observations of stars’ orbits at the heart of the Milky Way. Stellar mass black holes are predicted to exist in large numbers — 100 million in our Galaxy alone — but only two dozen have been found\, all in binaries….

SUMMARY:Securing Research Data: A Workshop on Emerging Practices in Computation and Storage for Sensitive Data
DESCRIPTION:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/securing-research-data-a-workshop-on-emerging-practices-in-computation-and-storage-for-sensitive-tickets-60499431428 \nResearchers\, computer scientists and data scientists from a range of disciplines are working with increasingly large\, multi-dimensional datasets in the context of complex networks and computing infrastructure. Data generated by these advanced applications are often subject to an evolving landscape of protection requirements\, due to the involvement of human subjects or critical physical infrastructure. At the same time\, collaborative research projects and teams drive demand for large-scale distributed platforms that can move data and compute securely over high-speed networks and cyberinfrastructure. How do we secure the data\, the network\, and the computer to meet this challenge? \nThis one-day workshop will convene researchers from a variety of disciplines who are leading these trends through their work in biology and medicine\, public health and the social sciences\, and other fields. In addition\, IT service providers and security architects will describe new services and platforms being developed to provide secure research data management and computation capabilities at scale\, while managing challenges of authentication\, access control\, and privacy protection. We will also present advanced theory on the tradeoffs between engineering systems for complexity and robustness\, and how this tradeoff in itself can create fragility. \nAttendees will: \n\nIdentify and discuss research trends and patterns across domains\, especially where large restricted or sensitive data are being mobilized for collaborations among researchers at different sites\nExamine the state of secure research data and compute infrastructure services\, design patterns\, and supporting capabilities that are providing models for sustainable and scalable solutions\nDiscuss infrastructure standards\, and share resources\, knowledge\, and structures for best practices\n\nFeatured Speakers \nFlorence Hudson\, Founder & CEO of FDHint. SUMMARY:Digital Equity: The Social and Human Rights Impacts of AI in Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Digital Equity: The Social and Human Rights Impacts of AI in Mexico\nThurs.\, August 29\, 2019 9:00 – 6:00 pm \nTecnológico de Monterrey\, Campus Estado de México\nKM. 3.5 Carr. Lago de Guadalupe\nCol. Margarita Maza de Juárez\nAtizapán de Zaragoza\, Estado de México\nC.P. 52926 \n#DigitalEquity19 | Workshop Information: wip.mx/de \nArtificial intelligence (AI) holds great potential to benefit society\, enabling greater efficiency\, equity\, and reach. But\, utilization of biased training data and ill-considered algorithms can undermine social gains by perpetuating and reinforcing social injustices. While AI-enabled systems have been shown to have these negative effects\, it is important to also consider how AI and intelligent tools can be applied to power some of the most innovative solutions to society’s most pressing challenges — from democratic engagement to humanitarian aid and digital inclusion. \nEquidad Digital brings together leading practitioners and scholars to discuss the social and human rights impacts of AI-enabled systems in the Mexico-U.S. context and to support the development of interdisciplinary research and capacity building.

SUMMARY:Robots Are Creatures\, Not Things
DESCRIPTION:with Madeline Gannon\nArtist / Roboticist\, Pittsburgh\, PA \nAn Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium\, co-sponsored by the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation and CITRIS People and Robots (CPAR)\, in collaboration with the Berkeley Arts and Design initiative as part of A+D Mondays @ BAMPFA. \nAfter 50 years of promises and potential\, robots are beginning to leave the lab to live in the wild with us. But how should we coexist with these intelligent\, autonomous machines? In this lecture\, Dr. Madeline Gannon discusses how art and technology are merging to forge new futures for human-robot relations. She shares her work in convincing robots to do things they were never intended to do: from transforming a giant industrial robot into living\, breathing mechanical creature\, to taming a horde autonomous robots to behave more like a pack of animals. By pushing the boundaries of human-robot interaction\, her work shows that robots can not only be useful\, but meaningful additions to our everyday lives. \nAbout Madeline Gannon\nDr. Madeline Gannon is a multidisciplinary designer inventing better ways to communicate with machines. In her work\, Gannon seeks to blend knowledge from design\, robotics\, and human-computer interaction to innovate at the intersection of art and technology. Gannon designs her research to engage with wide audiences across scientific and cultural communities: her work has been exhibited at international cultural institutions\, published at ACM conferences\, and covered by diverse global media outlets. Her 2016 interactive installation\, Mimus\, even earned her the nickname\, “The Robot Whisperer.” She is three-time World Economic Forum Cultural Leader\, and serves as a council member on the World Economic Forum Global Council for IoT\, Robotics\, & Smart Cities. Gannon holds a Ph.D. in computational design from Carnegie Mellon University\, a master’s in architecture from Florida International University\, and is a Research Fellow at the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University. \nMore information can be found at: atonaton.com \nAbout the Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium\nFounded by Prof. Ken Goldberg in 1997\, the ATC lecture series is an internationally respected forum for creative ideas. Always free of charge and open to the public\, the series is coordinated by the Berkeley Center for New Media and has presented over 200 leading artists\, writers\, and critical thinkers who question assumptions and push boundaries at the forefront of art\, technology\, and culture including: Vito Acconci\, Laurie Anderson\, Sophie Calle\, Bruno Latour\, Maya Lin\, Doug Aitken\, Pierre Huyghe\, Miranda July\, Billy Kluver\, David Byrne\, Gary Hill\, and Charles Ray. \nMonday Evenings\, 6:30-8:00pm\nOsher Theater\, BAMPFA\, Berkeley\, CA\nhttp://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/visit/getting-here

SUMMARY:Aging\, Research\, and Technology Innovation Summit
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nAlzheimer’s and neurodegenerative diseases are critical health and financial burdens on patients\, families\, and societies in this country and around the world. Through Medicare and Medicaid\, the US government is spending $200B this year on care and support\, and that is projected to reach $1Trillion by 2050. 5.8M people are directly affected in this country\, among 44M worldwide\, largely cared for by untrained family members – many of whom are forced to leave the paid workforce in order to provide such care. These numbers are expected to at least double by 2040. \nThe Summit will present innovative research\, interventions and technology solutions that are emerging to address the challenges of a wide array of neurodegenerative diseases. The goal of the Summit is to promote and present cutting edge research and technology innovation from across UC Berkeley and our sister UC campuses\, showcasing advances that will disrupt the way individuals\, clinicians\, providers\, and society addresses the impact of diverse neurodegenerative diseases. At the same time\, the Summit will expose students and key stakeholders alike to innovative\, scientific\, evidence-based research into lifestyle factors that have been shown to be effective in postponing the onset of dementia. \nPlease join global leaders in neurodegenerative disease research and technology innovation for a day of presentations\, poster sessions\, and valuable networking focused on cutting-edge solutions\, targeting issues related to prevention\, diagnosis\, and treatment. A percentage of the proceeds from this event will support scholarships for students interested in research on aging & elder care. The Summit is hosted by UC Berkeley aging research and education programs: Center for Research and Education in Aging (CREA)\, Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS)\, Center for Technology and Aging (CTA)\, OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)\, Fung Fellowship for Wellness and Technology Innovations\, the Berkeley Brain Initiative\, and the Center on the Economics and Demography of Aging (CEDA). \nREGISTER \n

SUMMARY:ATC Lecture — Leonel Moura\, “Non-Human Art”
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \nPresented by Berkeley Center for New Media and Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium\, co-sponsored by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and CITRIS People and Robots (CPAR)\, in collaboration with the Berkeley Arts and Design initiative as part of A+D Mondays @ BAMPFA. \nCan a machine create its own art? This question\, raised around 2000 by Leonel Moura is at the core of his work with robotics and artificial intelligence. With the development of artificial intelligence of recent years\, the possibility of machines being intelligent but also creative is at the center of a debate on the future of humanity. Will machines take over? Or\, is there an exaggeration over their capacities? \nLeonel Moura is a European artist born in Lisbon\, Portugal\, who works with AI and robotics. In 2001 he created the first robot arm able to generate unique paintings operate by an ‘ant algorithm’. In 2003 a swarm of ‘Painting Robots’ were able to produce artworks based on simple rules and emergent behavior. Since then he has produced several artbots\, each time more autonomous and sophisticated. RAP (Robotic Action Painter) was created for a permanent exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, and Bebot for the Expo Astana\, Kazakhstan\, Grand Palais\, Paris and Gulbenkian Foundation\, Lisbon. ISU (The Poet Robot)\, generates poems and paintings with letters and words. In 2004 he launched the Symbiotic Art Manifest stating that “machines can make art” (http://www.leonelmoura.com/symbiotic-art-manifesto/). In 2007 the Robotarium\, the first zoo dedicated to robots and artificial life\, opened in Alverca. Other works include 3D sculptures\, interactive installations\, generative art\, augmented reality\, space art and the play R.U.R. from Karel Capek\, with 3 robots performing aside 3 human actors\, premiered in São Paulo in 2010. \nHe has published or participated in several books\, such as Robots and Art\, Springer; Nonhuman Art\, LXXL; Hiperdesign\, IADE; Robot Art\, Obidos Patrimonium; Man+robots: symbiotic art\, Institut d’Art Contemporain\, Villeurbanne. In 2009 he was appointed European Ambassador for Creativity and Innovation.
