WAFR is a single-track workshop devoted to recent advances on algorithmic problems in robotics. The workshop proceedings will be published in a hardcover volume in the Springer STAR series\, and selected papers will be invited for publication in a special issue of the International Journal of Robotics Research. \nTopics:\nThe focus of WAFR is on the design and analysis of robot algorithms from both theoretical and practical angles. The topics of interest are very broad. We encourage papers on fundamental algorithmic issues\, such as complexity\, completeness\, machine learning\, probabilistic reasoning\, and new programming paradigms\, to name a few. We also encourage papers on applications of robot algorithms to important or new domains\, such as manufacturing\, legged locomotion\, distributed robotics\, human-robot interaction\, surgical robots\, intelligent prosthetics\, and brain-controlled robots. He’s a pioneer in the fields of pervasive computing\, collaborative innovation\, human-centered design and education. \nAbstract: In Mickey’s current research project\, “Primordial\,” he and his team are exploring the impact on design when three inevitable technology trends converge. Often called the “Internet of Things\,” pervasive computing is a game-changer that’s on a collision course with two complementary trends—digital manufacturing and machine learning. In 2012\, Mickey co-authored one of the essential field guides to the era of pervasive computing in his book\, Trillions. He believes that taken together\, these three trends give us the ability to shift to an entirely new set of design and business paradigms for the first time in history. The way we design for things that begin to “wake up” is uncharted territory. If we don’t take into account our connected future and continue designing for disconnected things\, we will design our way into irrelevance. The challenge designers face is how to surf these trends\, what to do about them\, and identify how designing “things” will change. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: David Wentzlaff\, Princeton University \n\nDate: 12/5/2016\, 2:00pm – 3:30pm \n\n\nLocation: 380\, Soda Hall \n\nTitle: Processors for the Data Center and Cloud of the Future \nAbstract: Current-day data centers and IaaS clouds (e.g. Amazon EC2\, MS Azure\, Google GCE) use microprocessors that are very similar to or the same as those used in small servers and desktops. This work rethinks the design of microprocessors specifically for data center use along with how microprocessors are affected by the novel economic models that have been popularized by IaaS clouds. This talk will describe several architectural changes including how a processor can be decomposed into sub-components (e.g. ALU\, Cache\, Fetch Unit) that can be individually rented in IaaS clouds\, how running similar programs can be taken advantage of in the data center\, how architectural features such as the flavor of memory bandwidth (bursty vs. bulk) can be provisioned and sold in the data center\, and novel memory architectures that enable the creation of sub-coherence domains of cache coherence across the data center. \nMore info: http://engineering.berkeley.edu/processors-data-center-and-cloud-future-2016-12-05

Walters is Senior Vice President at the California Emerging Technology Fund\, which has the mission of closing the Digital Divide in California. Susan joined the Fund after working as the Regional Director of Community Relations for Citibank for Greater Southern California. Prior to Citibank she operated a consulting practice in corporate social responsibility. The work focused on building strategic partnerships between nonprofit organizations and corporations\, strategic planning\, communications and marketing. She has worked in myriad areas ranging from telecommunications policy\, to disability access projects. Examples of her work include designing a highly successful technology job training program for low income adults and youth\, creating a brand strategy for a buy local food campaign and marketing programs to reach emerging markets. Her firm’s clients included: AOL\, Verizon\, Microsoft\, Independent Television Service (ITVS)\, San Francisco Giants\, Freddie Mac Foundation\, W. K. Kellogg Foundation and the FoodRoutes Network. Susan has held senior positions in Communications and Marketing with Odwalla and Pacific Bell. \nPrior to her work in the private sector Susan served as a senior staff member to Willie L. Brown\, Jr. during his tenure as Speaker of the California Assembly. In this talk\, Prof. Jes Broeng will share his experiences on establishing successful universities spin-out\, and on ways to improve the tech transfer system. The talk will take base in photonics technologies for health care and life science. \nBiography: Jes Broeng is a professor at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and a serial high-tech entrepreneur. He is a pioneer in the field of photonic crystal fibers and a co-founder of Crystal Fibre\, one of the region’s most successful photonics start-ups\, which was sold in 2008 (now NKT Photonics). In 2012\, he joined DTU to implement modern strategies to innovation and tech transfer. He has been instrumental in spinning out 7 companies from the Photonics Engineering department during the past 4 years. \nToday\, his main focus area is health care technologies and he is a co-founder of an upcoming\, joint innovation center for a major Danish hospital (Gentofte/Herlev) and the Technical University of Denmark. The goal is to eliminate the silos between researchers\, medical professionals and product innovators through daily interconnection. DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: Technology and Cultural Preservation\nSpeaker: Nicola Lercari\nDate: October 26\, 2016\, Wednesday\, 12-1pm\nLocation: Banatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\n \nNicola Lercari is Assistant Professor of World Heritage at UC Merced. He investigates digital preservation of heritage\, cross-media systems for museums\, and the analytical and interpretative role of the visualization of the past. \nClimate change\, prolonged drought periods\, the lack of cultural awareness and funding for physical conservation pose severe threats to the preservation of California’s natural and cultural heritage. Digital technologies of data capture and data curation provide viable solutions for the documentation\, interpretation\, and preservation of heritage sites. Nonetheless\, more work needs to be done to understand the effects of new\, emerging technologies in creating constituencies engaged in the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Thus\, this talk explores the social role of augmented reality (A/R)\, mobile apps\, and crowdsourcing platforms for citizen science\, in fostering cultural awareness and communication among communities of park and museum visitors. This presentation displays the preliminary results of the CITRIS-funded research project Bodie Digital Community – Connect with your Past. The ideas\, methods\, technologies\, and initiatives\, we designed in this project\, provide an opportunity to preserve Bodie for years to come. DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: Future of Distributed Energy Resources\nSpeaker: Ryan Hanley\nDate: October 19\, 2016\, Wednesday\, 12-1pm\nLocation: Banatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nRyan Hanley is the VP of Grid Engineering Solutions at SolarCity. \nDistributed energy resources (DER)\, and the customers who deploy them\, are no longer new to the energy space. Consumer-sited DERs such as rooftop solar\, stationary batteries\, electric vehicles\, smart inverters\, and dynamic loads are showing up in homes and business across the country\, even making appearances at booths within Consumer Electronics Shows. In fact\, Navigant research forecasts that DERs will more than double in penetration in the next 7 years in the United States\, growing three times faster than new central station energy generation. While DERs no longer sit on the sidelines with consumers\, the industry still has progress to make before fully unlocking the technical potential of these assets to improve grid design\, operations\, affordability\, and consumer satisfaction. \nIn this CITRIS seminar\, Ryan Hanley will highlight the potential that distributed energy resources hold for driving innovation in grid design\, planning\, and operations. Connecting diverse perspectives under one roof\, Jacobs Design Conversations are spaces for dialogue on a broad spectrum of innovations and ideas. As part of this series\, Elizabeth Gerber will share her insights with Berkeley’s design innovation community on Thursday\, October 13. The talk will take place at Jacobs Hall\, the Jacobs Institute’s hub for hands-on learning and making. \nAbout Elizabeth Gerber:\nAn associate professor at Northwestern University and faculty founder of Design for America\, Gerber will discuss “Understanding and Designing for Collective Innovation” at the Jacobs Institute. She says\, “Technology enables new forms of organizing to harness and empower diverse ventures to start up and scale — however\, without careful attention to organizational structure\, technology’s rapid growth may cripple the broad engagement it was designed to support. Can we foresee a future of collective innovation in which there is broad participation from identification to ideation and ultimately implementation? This talk frames the major challenges that stand in the way of this goal. Drawing on theory from social computing and organizational theory\, I outline a framework that will support collective innovation that is inclusive\, collaborative\, and comprehensive and highlights six challenge areas: roles\, intellectual property\, communication\, reputation\, feedback\, and job design.” \nAbout this Conversation:\nThis lecture-style talk is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Design\, construction\, maintenance and upgrading of civil engineering infrastructure requires fresh thinking to minimize use of materials\, energy and labor. This can be achieved by understanding the performance of the infrastructure\, both during its construction and throughout its design life\, through innovative monitoring. Advances in sensor systems offer intriguing possibilities to radically alter methods of condition assessment and monitoring of infrastructure. This talk will focus on the future of infrastructure; the rich information obtained from embedded sensors within infrastructure will act as a catalyst for new design\, construction\, operation and maintenance processes for integrated infrastructure systems linked directly with user behavior patterns. New generation sensor technologies offer intriguing possibilities that can alter the paradigms underlying existing methods of condition assessment and monitoring. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first annual Women in Technology Symposium! \nWednesday\, October 5\, 2016\, 11:30am-6:00pm\nBanatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nRegister now >\n  \nGender diversity among leadership teams and the broader workforce offers demonstrated advantages for innovative thinking\, job satisfaction\, and corporate bottom lines. Yet the percentage of women in computing jobs has actually declined over the last 25 years\, and now stands at roughly 25% in both industry and academia. \nThe causes for this gap remain unclear. Tech companies and other employers have tried offering flexible work hours and generous family leave; some universities allow women to stop the tenure clock to care for young children. \nAre such policies sufficient to bring women into parity with men\, both in numbers and in pay\, or are other nuances hindering full participation of women in the tech workforce? What incentives have inspired those women who have persisted in these fields? And what unique perspectives do women bring to a range of domains that make technology solutions more creative\, robust\, and equitable? \nAt the Women in Technology Symposium\, leaders and champions of women in technology will offer their thoughts on challenges to achieving gender diversity at all organizational levels of industry\, academia\, and the public sector. We will also present the first CITRIS Athena Awards\, to honor inspiring women and organizations making outstanding technical contributions and supporting the next generation of women and girls. \nPresented by CITRIS and the Banatao Institute and the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity\, and other partners from industry and academia.
