SUMMARY:The role of data science in preventing and rescuing children from human trafficking
DESCRIPTION:How can artificial intelligence and machine learning help prevent child exploitation and human trafficking? Researchers and advocates in academia\, industry and the nonprofit world are coming together in this panel to discuss technological interventions to combat this issue. \nFor example\, there are now about 425\,000 entries of missing children in the National Center for Missing & Exploitation Children’s database. Last year alone\, the NCMEC CyberTipline received more than 18.4 million reports of possible child sexual exploitation. There is a much promise in AI/ML to enable the search of tens of millions of images in an effort to a) identify children and suspects; b) associate images with network addresses or domain names and c) to distinguish new images from known ones. Searching and investigating these reports in a timely manner is nearly impossible without the assistance of technology. Moreover\, AI/ML may be instrumental in the timely prevention of trafficking. Research is ongoing regarding the use of AI/ML to detect alarming internet and social media messages\, including the use of online messaging to lure children into child trafficking. \nRSVP here: https://forms.gle/QPLsN3yw9My9agip8 \nEvent Type: Panel Discussion\nDate: Friday\, April 26\, 2019\nTime: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.\nOn Campus Location: Blum Hall\nRoom Name/Number: B100\nSponsor: Blum Center for Developing Economies

SUMMARY:Women in Tech: The Future of AI
DESCRIPTION:March 8\, 2019\nRegister on Eventbrite\nSince Ada Lovelace wrote the first computer program nearly 200 years ago\, women have contributed to the advancement of computing and helped pave the way for today’s artificial intelligence (AI). Today\, women are pushing the frontiers of AI in applications from robotics to recruiting\, from startups to venture capital. Equally far-reaching are women’s contributions to investigate AI’s social\, ethical\, and legal implications. For all the promise of new technology\, AI can exacerbate negative effects when it reinforces biases and inequalities. \nEstimates show that women comprise only 13.5 percent of those working in machine learning\, one of the fastest-growing technology fields. This well-recognized gender gap continues to deter talent and diminish the potential for the field\, which will affect innumerable aspects of our economy and everyday lives. The Women in Tech Initiative imagines a different future. \nAt this year’s symposium\, we will highlight the experiences of women in AI and explore our collective future with representatives from established companies\, startups\, academia\, and the public sector. \nThe event will also feature the Women in Tech Initiative Athena Awards recognizing those who have championed the advancement of women in technology. \nThe symposium is open to everyone\, encouraging a broader audience to join the conversation. Attendees will have the opportunity to share experiences\, establish new connections\, and collectively champion the advancement of women in technology. \nPresented by the Women in Technology Initiative at the University of California\, CITRIS and the Banatao Institute\, and the UC Berkeley College of Engineering. \n \nFor event questions or more information on sponsorship opportunities\, please contact:\nJill Finlayson\, Director\, Women in Technology Initiative\, witi@berkeley.edu\n

SUMMARY:Xixi Zhu on “Building a Gene Therapy Company with Scarce Resources"
DESCRIPTION:Biotech * Gene Therapy * Startups \n“Building a Gene Therapy Company with Scarce Resources”\nXixi Zhu \nVice President\, Business Development and Operations \nDNAlite Therapeutics \nAbout the Speaker: \nXixi Zhu brings her operation and business development expertise to DNAlite Therapeutics. She was previously an analyst for venture capital funds Laurel Ventures (China)\, Forbion Capital Partners (The Netherlands)\, and 4Bio Capital Partners (United Kingdom) investing in early-stage therapeutics companies. Xixi holds an MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise from Cambridge University and an MPhil in Neuroscience from University College London. \nDNAlite Therapeutics is an early-stage preclinical biotechnology company committed to bringing the next-generation of drugs to organs protected by mucus barriers. \nThe company was accelerated in the seventh cohort of the CITRIS Foundrystartup program and co-founded by UC Berkeley graduates Mubhij Ahmad\, M.S. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (’16) and Timothy Day\, Ph.D. Neuroscience (’17). \nTalk Abstract: \nThe outstanding innovation hubs arising throughout the Bay Area has made starting a biotechnology company as graduate students possible. Much like a science project\, the life of a start-up company is not straightforward\, but there are some common milestones from birth to growth and success or failure. Success is hardly replicable\, but we can learn how to not fail by learning from our predecessors’ mistakes. After all\, the only real preparation to build a company is by building a company. \nAbout the Series:\nLaunched in 2008\, the CITRIS Research Exchange delivers fresh perspectives on information technology and society from distinguished academic\, industry\, and civic leaders. SUMMARY:Workshop on Applying Advanced AI Workflows in Astronomy and Microscopy
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegister to Attend \nThis one-day workshop will focus on the challenges shared between observational astronomy and modern microscopy workflows. Advances in instrumentation\, computation and data management for both microscopy and astronomy suggest opportunities for the broader scientific community to learn from the challenges common to both fields. The high-velocity\, high-volume data generated by endeavors such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) or the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will require new techniques and cyberinfrastructure such as that provided by the Pacific Research Platform to handle the data they will produce. Best practices developed in these contexts may be applied to other domains. \nWe will introduce some of the challenges in microscopy and provide a survey of the techniques available to astronomers to deal with the ever-increasing flow of data\, such as adopting streaming workflows (versus file-based workflows)\, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning\, and GPU-accelerated analysis\, as well as storage and data distribution\, approaches that scale to the needs of a global community of researchers engaged in advanced microscopy imaging. \nPlease register by September 4 for this free event. \nProposed Summit Agenda\n9:00 am- 10:00 am Registration \n \n10:00 am -11:00 am Keynote \n11:00 am – 12:00 pm Challenges of Advanced Microscopy Workflows (20 min each) \n12:00 – 1:00 pm Lunch Roundtables \n \n1:00 – 2:00 pm AI in Astronomy (20 Min. each) \n2:00 – 3:00 pm Advanced CI Engineering (20 Min. each) \n3:00 – 3:15 pm Closing Remark  \n3:30 pm Adjourn \n“It turns out that the challenges of peering into the universe are similar to those associated with peering into a microscope.”\n-Larry Smarr\, Principal Investigator of the Pacific Research Platform\, Director\, Qualcomm Institute. \nFunding provided by CITRIS and the Banatao Institute\, UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced\, in collaboration with the Pacific Research Platform. Funding provided by the National Science Foundation\, award #ACI-1541349.
