DESCRIPTION:Jay Lund is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Davis and director of the Center for Watershed Sciences. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAmerica’s prosperity has originated in part from the ability to capitalize economically on groundbreaking discoveries from science and engineering research. Simultaneously\, a knowledgeable\, creative workforce has maintained the country’s global leadership in critical areas of technology. A strong capacity for leveraging fundamental scientific discoveries into powerful engines of innovation is essential to maintain our competitive edge in the future. This presentation will provide an overview of NSF’s investments in the creation of a national innovation ecosystem that helps accelerate the process of translating an idea into realty. It will offer a strategy for creating a culture of innovation in academia\, identify resources and opportunities for researchers to strengthen their translation efforts\, provide a few examples of NSF activities that have produced early impact\, and suggest scenarios for future initiatives and partnerships that expand our nation’s entrepreneurial spirit. \nBiography:\nDr. Don Millard is the Deputy Division Director of the division of Engineering Education and Centers (EEC)\, within the Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation. He is also currently serving as the Acting Division Director. Since coming to NSF in 2010\, he has been involved in the Advanced Technology Education (ATE) program\, the EHR Core Research (ECR) program\, the Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program\, the Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program\, and the Transforming Undergraduate Education in Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Math (TUES) program. Prior to joining NSF\, Dr. Millard spent 27 years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During his many years at Rensselaer\, he served as a faculty member of the Electrical\, Computer\, and Systems Department and directed a number of research centers; including the Center for Integrated Electronics. \nDr. Millard’s research interests include engineering education\, electronics design\, electronics manufacturing\, electronic media development\, information technology\, electrical testing methodologies\, semiconductor fabrication\, and non-destructive inspection and evaluation. He is the founder of the Mobile Studio project\, which enables students to learn and perform experiments that use an oscilloscope\, function generator\, digital control\, and some form of power supply – at anytime\, anyplace. He holds a patent for the development of a laser-induced\, plasma-based Non-Contact Electrical Pathway and has received such awards as the Best Paper Award of the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) and the Premier Award for Excellence in Engineering Education Courseware. Dr. Millard has been voted Professor of the Year on three occasions\, selected as RHA Professor of the Month and was chosen as the Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Professor. \nThis talk is sponsored by the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology and co-hosted by the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) in collaboration with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department and the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research.

DESCRIPTION:Ravi Prasher is the Division Director of Energy Storage and Distributed Resources division at LBNL. Ravi joined LBNL in June 2015. Prior to joining LBNL\, Ravi was the VP of product development of Sheetak Inc.\, a startup developing solid state thermoelectric energy converters. Ravi earlier worked as one of the first program directors at ARPA-E. At ARPA-E\, Ravi created the BEET-IT (on cooling/heating of buildings) and HEATS (on thermal storage) programs. Prior to joining ARPA-E\, Ravi was the technology development manager of thermal management group at Intel. Admission is first come\, first served.\n\nBasic science is common to all humankind and helps unify the world\, even among nations in political conflict. “Where do we come from?” and “Why do we exist?” are global themes driving scientific research. Recent examples include collaborations among Israel\, Iran and the Palestinian Authority. \nJoin two UC Berkeley scientists who are world leaders in their fields — theoretical particle physicist Hitoshi Murayama and experimental particle astrophysicist Bernard Sadoulet — for a look at how scientific research has brought people from different nations\, religions\, races\, cultures\, languages and ideologies to work together toward common goals. \nDr. Camille Crittenden\, Deputy Director of CITRIS (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) and formerly Executive Director of the Human Rights Center at Berkeley Law\, will introduce Professors Murayama and Sadoulet and set the context for the discussion. \n\n \nCamille Crittenden serves as Deputy Director of CITRIS\, Director of the CITRIS Connected Communities Initiative\, and Executive Director of the CITRIS Social Apps Lab. Prior to coming to CITRIS in 2012\, she was Executive Director of the Human Rights Center at Berkeley Law\, where she helped to develop its program in human rights\, technology\, and new media. She has written and spoken widely on these topics\, as well as technology applications for civic engagement\, government transparency and accountability\, and the digital divide. She held previous positions as Assistant Dean for Development with International and Area Studies at UC Berkeley and in development and public relations at University of California Press and San Francisco Opera. She earned an MA and Ph.D. from Duke University. \n \nHitoshi Murayama is a well-known theoretical particle physicist who works broadly\, even on astrophysics\, cosmology\, and condensed matter physics. He has been a professor at the University of California\, Berkeley\, since 2000\, and is also the founding director of the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) at the University of Tokyo\, since 2007. Born in Japan\, lived in Germany for four years and in the US for 21 years\, and served on advisory committees around the world\, he is a multi-cultural global denizen. In October 2014\, he was invited to give a speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York about how science unites people and brings peace. He received the Yukawa Commemoration Prize in Theoretical Physics and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. \n \nBernard Sadoulet\, a graduate of Ecole Polytechnique (1963) and a “Docteur ès sciences” of Paris-Orsay University (1971)\, is by training an elementary particle physicist. As such\, he had the chance of participating in two prestigious experiments which led to Nobel Prizes: the Mark I experiment at SLAC which discovered the J/ψ\, the τ lepton and the charm\, and UA1 at CERN which discovered the intermediate vector bosons W and Z. In 1984 he decided to shift his efforts towards particle astrophysics and cosmology. In 1985 he was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and from 1989 to 2001 he was the Director of the Center for Particle Astrophysics\, one of the 11 first-generation Science and Technology Centers of the National Science Foundation. He is currently Director of the UC system-wide Institute for Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (INPAC). DESCRIPTION:Seminar | October 30 | 4-5 p.m. | 290 Hearst Memorial Mining Building\nSpeaker: Christos Cassandras\, Professor\, Boston University \nSponsors: Institute of Transportation Studies\, CITRIS (Ctr for Info Technology Research in the Interest of Society)\, TRUST \n  \n“Smart Cities” are an example of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) with direct impact to urban settings\, where sensor and actuator networks are deployed to monitor the environment and civil infrastructure. Based on data collected\, the goals include improvements in traffic control\, energy distribution\, emergency response\, and location-based commerce\, to name a few. Exploiting the ubiquitous wireless connectivity in these settings\, a dynamic data-driven resource allocation framework is envisioned capitalizing on recent advances in real-time optimization algorithms which are event-driven and scalable. An application of this framework to adaptive traffic light control will be presented. A number of other ongoing Smart City projects will be described\, including a “smart parking” system which dynamically assigns and reserves an optimal parking space for a user (driver); a new framework for energy-aware traffic routing in urban networks\, specifically targeting Electric Vehicles (EVs); and the “Street Bump” system in the City of Boston which uses regular smartphone capabilities to collect roadway obstacle data and identify and classify them for efficient maintenance and repair. Lastly\, this talk will address the need to incorporate the “social’’ dimension in CPS (possibly referring to them as Cyber-Social-Physical Systems) through proper incentive mechanisms for inducing Smart City citizens to adopt provably socially optimal policies.
