DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: “Transportation Planning in a Time of Transition” \nSpeaker: Kate Gordon\, CEO\, California Forward \nPLEASE NOTE: This lecture has been moved from in person to completely virtual via Zoom. Registration is required. Free and open to the public. \nAbstract: The world is in an unprecedented time of transition. New and emerging geopolitical\, economic and climate forces are converging at the state-local level to affect every aspect of decision-making. Gordon’s talk will focus on how all these forces are driving California’s leadership on the move away from fossil fuel extraction and toward the electrification of the transportation sector — but will argue that the same forces must equally and urgently usher in a new era of transportation and land use planning. In particular\, Gordon will argue that climate risk reduction and resilience must be raised to the same level of urgency in California land use policy as greenhouse gas emission reduction has been for the past several decades. \nSpeaker Bio: Kate Gordon is the CEO of California Forward (CA FWD)\, an organization dedicated to a more sustainable\, resilient and inclusive economy across every region of the state. Prior to this role\, she served within the Biden-Harris administration as senior advisor to U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm\, where she co-created the Community Benefits Plan framework for Department of Energy (DOE) funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act. Gordon also served for several years in California state government as the director of the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research and a senior climate policy advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom. In this role\, Gordon launched or led several initiatives to better integrate climate and economic development strategy across the state\, including the Commission on Catastrophic Wildfire Cost and Recovery\, the Regions Rise Together initiative\, and the Community Economic Resilience Fund (CERF). Participants will also be invited to submit a policy memo proposal to the FAS Day One Project. Those selected to publish a policy memo via the FAS Day One Project will receive additional training and writing assistance. \nIn this session\, the third of four\, participants will gain skills to offer clear and actionable guidance to policymakers in both public and private sectors. Co-led by Erin Hestir\, director of CITRIS at UC Merced\, Adam Wilson of the University at Buffalo\, and Jasper Slingsby at the University of Cape Town\, the project paired imaging spectrometry and remote sensing with on-the-ground ecological research to map biodiversity across South Africa’s Cape Floristic Region.
