DESCRIPTION:CITRIS and the Banatao Institute at UC Santa Cruz is inviting UCSC researchers to apply for research support through its Campus Seed Funding program. For 2020\, the program will fund projects focused on providing solutions to issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and disaster preparedness. \nPandemic and disaster preparedness proposals may address but are not limited to the following areas of research: \nBroader Impacts \n\nEducation innovation: Zoom has become an ad-hoc replacement for most instruction. What technologies and new approaches can make remote education more effective? How do we ensure access to all students?\nFuture of work: Again\, Zoom is the new office for many\, yet many essential workers\, from meatpackers to farmworkers to grocery clerks\, have been placed at greater risk\, revealing glaring inequities in our workforce. How can we innovate to support both workers able to work virtually and those who cannot? What tools and strategies can we use to better direct resources and support?\nFood Supply: Perishable products like dairy\, eggs\, and produce are being composted at industrial scale\, while lines at food banks stretch for miles in some states. Land IQ has developed a statewide land use mapping program for the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) that implements comprehensive ground-truthing efforts for calibrating and validating remotely sensed models for the ultimate classification of all agricultural fields in California. This amounts to approximately 380\,000 individual fields\, 2.0 acres and greater\, with an accuracy of 97.6%. Also\, water resources are limited; thus\, enhanced and efficient methods to accurately estimate crop consumptive use of water are paramount. Land IQ integrates its agricultural land use mapping\, other lines of evidence\, and robust ground-truthing (i.e. multiple climate stations) to calibrate and validate remotely sensed crop consumptive use models. This includes a combination of high-density\, specific ground measurements\, and remotely sensed modeling\, calibrated with those measurements. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the importance of comprehensive ground-truthing to ensure accuracy for both the remotely sensed agricultural land use mapping and crop consumed water estimates. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Kimmelshue is a founding partner and Principal Soil & Agricultural Scientist with Land IQ. These prints are also understood universally across most AI systems trained to recognize the same objects. It’s art by AI\, for AI. DESCRIPTION:Multi-modality Remote Sensing Data Acquisition and Analysis for High Throughput Phenotyping in Agriculture\nEngineering innovations around technology and agriculture are dynamically changing the way the world grows\, transports and consumes food.  \nAbout the talk:\nSensing technologies are rapidly gaining popularity for field-based high throughput phenotyping applications. In addition to direct measurements of traditional phenotypes\, these sensors potentially provide surrogate measurements for plant structural characteristics and chemistry. Opportunities and challenges associated with acquisition\, processing\, and analysis of high resolution RGB\, VNIR hyperspectral data\, and discrete return LiDAR data acquired from UAVs by Purdue University for row crop mapping and monitoring will be discussed. Results from multi-modality\, multi-temporal predictive modeling of complex phenotypes such as biomass using data-driven machine learning approaches will be presented. Opportunities and hurdles to the generalization of predictive models across geographic areas and time periods will be discussed. \nAbout the speaker: \nMelba Crawford is the Nancy Uridil and Francis Bossu Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue University. As digital platforms and tools have become pervasive in our public\, professional\, and private lives\, concern has intensified about the security of our information\, institutions\, and online identities. The need for innovation in cybersecurity strategies — from the technical hardware\, software and networks to training the needed workforce — will drive significant investment and attention for the foreseeable future. \nCyber breaches are projected to cost the global economy $2.1 trillion by 2019\, and jobs in information security are projected to grow 37% between 2012 and 2022\, much faster than the average for all other occupations. Despite these opportunities\, women are vastly underrepresented in the field\, holding only 18% of cybersecurity positions.
