SUMMARY:ATC Lecture — Guy Hoffman\, “Transience\, Replication\, and the Paradox of Social Robotics”
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public \nPresented by the Berkeley Center for New Media and Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium\, co-sponsored by the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies and CITRIS People and Robots (CPAR)\, in collaboration with the Berkeley Arts and Design initiative as part of A+D Mondays @ BAMPFA. \nGuy Hoffman\, Robotics Researcher\, Cornell University \nAs we continue to develop social robots designed for connectedness\, we struggle with paradoxes related to authenticity\, transience\, and replication. In this talk\, Cornell University robotics researcher Guy Hoffman links his fifteen years of experience designing social robots with hundred-year-old texts on transience\, replication\, and the fear of dying. Can there be meaningful relationships with robots who do not suffer natural decay? What would our families look like if we all chose to buy identical robotic family members? Could handcrafted robotics offer a relief from the mass replication of the robot’s physical body and thus also from the mass customization of social experiences? \nFor more information\, visit artsdesign.berkeley.edu. \nDr. Guy Hoffman is an Assistant Professor and the Mills Family Faculty Fellow in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. Prior to that he was an Assistant Professor at IDC Herzliya and co-director of the IDC Media Innovation Lab. Hoffman holds a Ph.D from MIT in the field of human-robot interaction. He heads the Human-Robot Collaboration and Companionship (HRC2) group\, studying the algorithms\, interaction schema\, and designs enabling close interactions between people and personal robots in the workplace and at home. Among others\, Hoffman developed the world’s first human-robot joint theater performance\, and the first real-time improvising human-robot Jazz duet. His research papers won several top academic awards\, including Best Paper awards at robotics conferences in 2004\, 2006\, 2008\, 2010\, 2013\, 2015\, 2018\, and 2019. His TEDx talk is one of the most viewed online talks on robotics\, watched more than 3 million times.

SUMMARY:2019 BECC Conference: Scaling Up
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n  \nJoin CITRIS/CIEE\, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)\, and the Stanford Environmental and Energy Policy Analysis Center for three days of education\, networking\, and coming together to help push back against the climate problems facing the globe. \nThe Behavior\, Energy & Climate Change (BECC) Conference brings together researchers\, policymakers\, utilities\, and businesses focused on energy and behavior to advance knowledge and actionable climate solutions. This year’s conference will be held from November 17th-20th\, at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento\, California. \nThe theme this year is “Scaling Up”. With many ecosystems at the brink of collapse\, the need to mitigate climate change is more urgent than ever. BECC has been at the forefront of supporting behavioral research to address climate and energy issues for more than a decade. Now is the time to take these established principles and practices and scale them up. Scaling up means looking at the big picture\, adapting small interventions for broad application\, working with others\, addressing policy\, and generally taking climate action to the next level. In 2019\, through regular and special sessions\, we plan to showcase research\, programs\, organizations and people that help move toward a sustainable energy and climate future. \nThis year’s keynote speaker is Phil Sharp\, a fellow with the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Dr. Sharp\,  who served as President of Resources for the Future from 2005 until 2016\, has a distinguished record across energy and environmental research and policy. During a 20-year congressional tenure as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana\, Dr. Sharp took key leadership roles in the development of landmark energy legislation including the Energy Policy Act of 1992 and the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. After leaving Congress\, Dr. Sharp was a member of the National Research Council’s Committee on Effectiveness and Impact of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards and he chaired the Secretary of Energy’s Electric Systems Reliability Task Force. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:4th Annual Women in Tech Symposium: Reimagining Cybersecurity For All
DESCRIPTION:Women in Tech Symposium: Reimagining Cybersecurity for All\nFriday\, March 6\, 2020\, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nSibley Auditorium\, Bechtel Engineering Center\, UC Berkeley\nWomen in Tech Initiative at the University of California\nRegister > \nAbout this event:\nData breaches\, identity theft\, ransomware\, deep fakes\, doxxing. As digital platforms and tools have become pervasive in our public\, professional\, and private lives\, concern has intensified about the security of our information\, institutions\, and online identities. The need for innovation in cybersecurity strategies — from the technical hardware\, software and networks to training the needed workforce — will drive significant investment and attention for the foreseeable future. \nCyber breaches are projected to cost the global economy $2.1 trillion by 2019\, and jobs in information security are projected to grow 37% between 2012 and 2022\, much faster than the average for all other occupations. Despite these opportunities\, women are vastly underrepresented in the field\, holding only 18% of cybersecurity positions. At the same time\, women face unique risks and threats of bullying and harassment in the online ecosystem. How can we engage the most inclusive talent pool to tackle the growing challenges\, confident that we are mitigating risk\, encouraging safe practices\, and developing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals? \nThis public symposium will highlight the experiences and career paths of women in cybersecurity\, including those working to advance secure systems within their organizations as well as improve the privacy and security of individual users of online platforms. The event will also feature the Women in Tech Initiative Athena Awards recognizing those who have championed the advancement of women in technology. \nWho should attend?\nWe welcome participants from startups\, nonprofit and government organizations\, and established companies as well as students\, staff\, and faculty. The symposium is open to everyone\, allowing a broader audience the chance to join the conversation and reimagine cybersecurity for all. Attendees will walk away with deep insights about our cybersecurity future\, and gain a community of inspiring and motivating people that will champion the advancement of women in technology. \nAgenda \n\n8:30 am Registration at Sibley Auditorium\n9:00 am Welcoming Remarks: Camille Crittenden\, Executive Director\, CITRIS and the Banatao Institute and Co-Founder of the Women in Tech Initiative at UC\n9:20 am Opening Remarks: “Building a Responsible Data Economy\,” Dawn Song\, UC Berkeley\n9:40 am Introducing the Athena Awards and presentation of the Athena Award for Executive Leadership: Rama Akkiraju\, Distinguished Engineer & Director\, IBM Watson. Global and Systemic Cyber Threats\nCybersecurity is no longer just a concern for the IT department – vulnerabilities in our digital services and infrastructure threaten much of the world around us. Cybercrime is predicted to put at risk $5.2 trillion globally over the next five years\, and affect everything from the utility of the Internet of Things to rising geopolitical tensions and the spread of disinformation. Systemic threats require a systemic response\, and women are at the forefront of the dynamic intersection between people and digital technologies. Join our expert panelists from diverse corners of the ecosystem to explore what is at stake and how cybersecurity must evolve to protect the promise of the digital revolution for all.Moderated by: Laura Bate\, New America\nAshley Tolbert\, Senior Security Engineer\, Netflix\nAanchal Gupta\, Head of Security in Calibra\, Facebook\nMichele Guel\, Distinguished Engineer & IoT Security Strategist\, Cisco Systems\nRaluca Popa\, Co-Founder of the RiseLab\, UC Berkeley\n11:45 am Athena Award\, Academic Leadership: Alice Agogino\, Professor of Mechanical Engineering\, College of Engineering\, UC Berkeley\n12:00 pm Lunch and Transition to Breakout Rooms\n\nCyber Career Tips & Tricks\nLed by Kavya Pearlman\, Cyber Security Strategist\, Wallarm &\nDeidre (Day-Dree) Diamond\, CyberSN/Secure Diversity\nTools and Tech for Cybersecurity\nLed by Gio Kao\, Research and Design Manager\, Sandia National Laboratories\nCybersecurity and the Health Sector\nLed by Heather McPherson\, Kaiser Permanente &\nSerena Villalobos\, Senior Consultant\, Quasar I.T.
