The event explored the game-changing potential of innovative tools and practices in humanitarian contexts\, the role of business\, and how new partnerships are leading to better outcomes for millions of people affected by conflict and natural disaster around the world. \nThe discussions and recommendations will be captured in an outcome document\, which will further inform and guide the development of solutions. DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, March 1\n Time: 12 – 1 pm\n Location: Room 250\, Sutardja Dai Hall\n Title: “Social media and social justice in Israel: Sounding the voice of the marginalized”\nSpeaker: Prof. Amit Schejter\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev \nPlease join us for a presentation from Prof. Amit Schejter where he will discuss “Social media and social justice in Israel: Sounding the voice of the marginalized.” \nSummary:\nThe emergence of new means of social media in recent years has made way for both utopian and dystopian discourses regarding their impact on the common good in general and on democratization and social participation in public life in particular. This conversation\, however\, rarely discusses the least advantaged elements of society that have traditionally been sidelined in political discourse. \nRooted in a redistributive justice frame that challenges the accepted utilitarian capitalist normative choices that guide Western societies\, this talk ties a theory of new media to the social justice theories of John Rawls and Amartya Sen and proposes a different prescription for the role of media in contemporary society and for the priorities media policymakers should make in light of new media developments. Using distinct case studies in which the use of media by marginalized groups in Israeli society is highlighted — Bedouins\, Palestinians\, refugees and migrants — the talk demonstrates the role of new media in the life of marginalized communities and their potential.

DESCRIPTION:Auto use is growing globally\, along with the environmental and societal problems it generates\, climate change most notably. A recent slowdown in the growth in vehicle-miles-traveled in the U.S. and Europe\, however\, has raised hopes that some parts of the world may have reached “peak driving.”  What is behind this recent slowdown\, and is it a true or temporary peak?  Answering these questions requires a close look at the behavior underlying these trends and at the numerous economic\, technological\, and cultural changes that are driving changes in travel behavior.  In this presentation\, I share findings from studies from UC Davis and elsewhere on some of the critical changes that are shaping the future of travel demand \nDr. Susan Handy is Chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy and the Director of the National Center for Sustainable Transportation at the University of California\, Davis.  She is internationally known for her research on the relationships between transportation and land use\, particularly the impact of neighborhood design on travel behavior.  Her current work focuses on bicycling as a mode of transportation and on strategies for reducing automobile dependence. \nRegister to Attend \n———————— \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:"Mechanical Computing Redux for the Internet of Things" with Tsu-Jae King Liu\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:The proliferation of mobile electronic devices and the emergence of applications such as wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things have brought energy consumption to the fore of challenges for future information-processing devices. The energy efficiency of a digital logic integrated circuit is fundamentally limited by non-zero transistor off-state leakage current. Mechanical switches have zero leakage current and potentially can overcome this fundamental limit. This seminar will describe recent progress toward realizing the promise of ultra-low-power mechanical computing. \nTsu-Jae King Liu received the B.S.\, M.S.\, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. From 1992 to 1996 she was a Member of Research Staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Palo Alto\, CA). In August 1996 she joined the faculty of the University of California\, Berkeley\, where she is currently the TSMC Distinguished Professor in Microelectronics\, and Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Dr. Liu’s research awards include the DARPA Significant Technical Achievement Award (2000) for development of the FinFET\, the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award (2010) for contributions to nanoscale MOS transistors\, memory devices\, and MEMs devices\, the Intel Outstanding Researcher in Nanotechnology Award (2012)\, and the Semiconductor Industry Association Outstanding Research Award (2014). She has authored or co-authored close to 500 publications and holds over 90 U.S. patents\, and is a Fellow of the IEEE. DESCRIPTION:Stuart Russell is currently a professor of computer science\, director of the Center for Intelligent Systems\, and holder of the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering at UC Berkeley. He has published over 100 papers on a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. His books include “The Use of Knowledge in Analogy and Induction” (Pitman\, 1989)\, “Do the Right Thing: Studies in Limited Rationality” (with Eric Wefald\, MIT Press\, 1991)\, and “Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach” (with Peter Norvig\, Prentice Hall\, 1995\, 2003). \nAbstract: \nAutonomous weapons systems select and engage targets without human intervention; they become lethal when those targets include humans. LAWS might include\, for example\, armed quadcopters that can search for and eliminate enemy combatants in a city\, but do not include cruise missiles or remotely piloted drones for which humans make all targeting decisions. The artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics communities face an important ethical decision: whether to support or oppose the development of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS). \nThe UN has held three major meetings in Geneva under the auspices of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons\, or CCW\, to discuss the possibility of a treaty banning autonomous weapons. There is at present broad agreement on the need for “meaningful human control” over selection of targets and decisions to apply deadly force. Much work remains to be done on refining the necessary definitions and identifying exactly what should or should not be included in any proposed treaty. \nFree and open to the public. This facility is a vital piece of the CITRIS pipeline running from the minds of researchers through CITRIS laboratories\, and into the markets\, industries\, and streets of the world. The 1\,700 ft2 Invention Lab is located on the first floor of Sutardja Dai Hall at UC Berkeley and supports 3 major functions: \n\nLearn: Faculty teach Engineering and New Media courses on interactive product design and prototyping.\nBuild: The lab offers a full suite of tools\, technical support and fabrication services for creating functional prototypes.\nLaunch: The lab promotes turning concepts and ideas into new ventures by offering work space for the Foundry business incubator.\n\nWe hope to see you there! \nFeatured Photo Credit: Matt Beardsley
