SUMMARY:Regis B. Kelly\, Innovating Innovatively
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Title: Innovating Innovatively at UC \nBanatao Auditorium\, 310 Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nWednesday\, April 29\, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST) \nREGISTER \nAbstract: \nOur University was created by Californians to improve the quality of their lives. As a research university we fulfill that role by converting our amazingly creative discoveries into practical benefits for society.  An efficient way to provide benefits while simultaneously promoting job and economic growth is for our scientists to create startup companies.  UC fosters its startups through mentoring and providing access to incubator lab space and seed funding.  In large part through the creation of its four Institutes for Science and Innovation\, UC has massively expanded its commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship and is on its way to being preeminent in its mission to serve society. Success in doing good will hopefully lead to enhanced government support of our efforts and help us attract even finer students. \nSpeaker Biography: \nRegis B. Kelly is the Director of QB3\, one of four California Institutes for Science and Innovation\, created by the California Legislature to strengthen the academic foundation of its technology-based industries. QB3 is the only one of the four devoted exclusively to biology and to the life science industries. It is an innovation center made up of over 200 quantitative biologists at three northern California campuses (UCB\, UCSC & UCSF) working at the interface of the physical and biological sciences and a team of professionals converting its discoveries into practical benefits for society. \n\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. SUMMARY:The UC San Diego Design Lab: Human-Technology Teamwork
DESCRIPTION:Don Norman\, Professor Emeritus\, Cognitive Science\, UC San Diego \nMay 4\, 2015\n12:00pm\n310 Sutardja Dai Hall\, Banatao Auditorium UC Berkeley \nDon Norman likes to explain that he was living happily in Palo Alto\, retired\, busy\, and did not want a job. But Pradeep Khosla\, the chancellor at UCSD came to his home and lured him back by giving him two goals: be important\, be exciting. In this public seminar\, Don will describe the origins and current status of the newly formed Design Lab with its three main themes: active learning\, human-technology teamwork\, and building the San Diego Design community. \nDon is professor emeritus of both psychology and cognitive science. He has been a VP of Apple\, executive at HP\, and design professor at Northwestern and KAIST (Korea). He is co-founder of the Nielsen Norman group\, an IDEO Fellow\, fellow of the Design Research Society\, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His books include Emotional Design\, Living with Complexity\, and most recently an expanded and revised edition of Design of Everyday Things.

SUMMARY:Lise Getoor\, Big Graph Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Seminar title: Big Graph Data Science \nBanatao Auditorium\, 310 Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nWednesday\, May 6\, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST) \nREGISTER \nAbstract:\nOne of the challenges in big data analytics lies in being able to reason collectively about extremely large\, heterogeneous\, incomplete\, and noisy interlinked data. We need data science techniques which can represent and reason effectively with this form of rich and multi-relational graph data. In this talk\, I will describe some common inference patterns needed for graph data including: collective classification (predicting missing labels for nodes)\, link prediction (predicting potential edges)\, and entity resolution (determining when two nodes refer to the same underlying entity). I will describe some key capabilities required to solve these problems\, and finally I will describe a highly scalable open-source probabilistic programming language being developed within my group to solve these challenges. \nSpeaker Bio: \nLise Getoor is a professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. Her research areas include machine learning\, data integration and reasoning under uncertainty\, with an emphasis on graph and network data. She is a AAAI Fellow\, serves on the Computing Research Association and International Machine Learning Society boards\, was co-chair of ICML 2011\, is a recipient of an NSF Career Award and eight best paper and best student paper awards. She was recently recognized as one of the top ten emerging researchers leaders in data mining and data science based on citation and impact\, according to KDD Nuggets.  She received her PhD from Stanford University\, her MS from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and her BS from the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and was a professor at the University of Maryland\, College Park from 2001–2013. \n  \n  \n  \n\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. SUMMARY:"Machines of Loving Grace" John Markoff\, New York Times
DESCRIPTION:The CITRIS People and Robots Initiative Presents: \nA Distinguished Lecture by John Markoff of the New York Times \n“Machines of Loving Grace”\nDate: Thursday\, May 7\, 2015   |  Time: 11am-12pm\nLocation: Banatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley \n  \nIn Machines of Loving Grace\, New York Times reporter John Markoff\, the first reporter to cover the World Wide Web\, offers a sweeping history of the complicated and evolving relationship between humans and computers. Over the recent years\, the pace of technological change has accelerated dramatically\, reintroducing this difficult ethical quandary with newer and far weightier consequences. As Markoff chronicles the history of automation\, from the birth of the artificial intelligence and intelligence augmentation communities in the 1950s\, to the modern day brain trusts at Google and Apple in Silicon Valley\, and on to the expanding tech corridor between Boston and New York\, he traces the different ways developers have addressed this fundamental problem and urges them to carefully consider the consequences of their work. \n  \nWe are on the verge of a technological revolution\, Markoff argues\, and robots will profoundly transform the way our lives are organized. Developers must now draw a bright line between what is human and what is machine\, or risk upsetting the delicate balance between them. \n  \nRegister to Attend \nLive broadcast at http://video.citris.berkeley.edu/playlists/webcast. SUMMARY:Impacts of Structural Health Monitoring on Lightweight Design
DESCRIPTION:Time and Location:   Friday August 28\, 2015.   11:00-11:45am   Kemper 1003 UC DAVIS\n \nLunch & Discussion at Gunrock Pub 12:00pm hosted by CITRIS for RSVP’d guests \nAbstract: \nModern lightweight structures\, particularly civil aircraft structures\, are designed to tolerate certain levels of damage while maintaining structural health. It is considered and accepted that damages are present\, as long as they are discovered early enough before reaching a critical size. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)\, an emerging structure damage assessment methodology can support or even replace traditional elaborate inspection procedures by means of installed smart sensor networks. This talk investigates the structural health (i.e. strength) of damage tolerant lightweight structures during operation\, on-line and over the entire lifetime of the structures. We’ll also examine new interdisciplinary research on structural analysis techniques\, effects of damages in composite materials\, implications of damages for lightweight constructions\, and finally SHM methods and sensors placement to optimally identify critical damages. \n  \nBiographies: \nMartin Schagerl received his PhD in mechanical engineering and a habilitation in mechanics from the Vienna University of Technology\, Austria\, where he also held the position of university assistant at the Institute of Mechanics from 1995 to 2002. Awarded a Max-Kade fellowship he visited the Mathematics Department of the University of Maryland in 2000/2001. In 2002 he started to work for the structure analysis department of Airbus in Hamburg\, Germany. During this employment he contributed particularly to the aircraft programs A380\, A400M\, and A350. 2009 he moved to the Johannes Kepler University Linz\, Austria\, where he was appointed full professor and head of the Institute of Constructional Lightweight Design. Prof. Schagerl is member and since 2006 chair of the Industry Committee for Structural Analysis\, the expert and editorial board of the Handbook Structure Analysis HSB. \n  \nChristoph Viechtbauer received his PhD in mechatronics from the Johannes Kepler University Linz\, Austria. He joined the Institute of Constructional Lightweight Design as university assistant in 2010. Since 2014 he leads the research group of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Structural Strength Control of Lightweight Construction which research focusses on static strength and fatigue life analysis of lightweight structures\, effects of damages and manufacturing defects in composite materials\, and mechatronic systems for Structural Health Monitoring. Dr. Viechtbauer is member and since 2014 business unit manager of the Association of German Engineers VDI in Austria.
