DESCRIPTION:About this Event \nJulie Baker will deliver a technical talk on the formation of her company\, Ursa Space Systems\, and how it leverages the largest Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite network to gather data and directly measure natural and built systems. She will discuss why a virtual constellation of SAR satellites is needed and how the company has developed applications. \n\n\nJulie Baker co-founded Ursa Space Systems in 2014 to connect information-rich satellite data with critical decision-makers around the globe. As Ursa’s COO\, Julie leads the administrative team supporting Ursa’s successful operations and serves on Ursa’s board of directors. She is a passionate leader in workplace diversity\, playing a key role in creating Ursa’s diverse and 50% female workforce. \nBaker has 30 years of experience in the software industry\, including 15 years in engineering and technical management. SUMMARY:2019 BECC Conference: Scaling Up
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n  \nJoin CITRIS/CIEE\, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)\, and the Stanford Environmental and Energy Policy Analysis Center for three days of education\, networking\, and coming together to help push back against the climate problems facing the globe. \nThe Behavior\, Energy & Climate Change (BECC) Conference brings together researchers\, policymakers\, utilities\, and businesses focused on energy and behavior to advance knowledge and actionable climate solutions. This year’s conference will be held from November 17th-20th\, at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento\, California. \nThe theme this year is “Scaling Up”. With many ecosystems at the brink of collapse\, the need to mitigate climate change is more urgent than ever. BECC has been at the forefront of supporting behavioral research to address climate and energy issues for more than a decade. Now is the time to take these established principles and practices and scale them up. Scaling up means looking at the big picture\, adapting small interventions for broad application\, working with others\, addressing policy\, and generally taking climate action to the next level. In 2019\, through regular and special sessions\, we plan to showcase research\, programs\, organizations and people that help move toward a sustainable energy and climate future. \nThis year’s keynote speaker is Phil Sharp\, a fellow with the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Dr. Sharp\,  who served as President of Resources for the Future from 2005 until 2016\, has a distinguished record across energy and environmental research and policy. During a 20-year congressional tenure as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana\, Dr. Sharp took key leadership roles in the development of landmark energy legislation including the Energy Policy Act of 1992 and the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. After leaving Congress\, Dr. Sharp was a member of the National Research Council’s Committee on Effectiveness and Impact of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards and he chaired the Secretary of Energy’s Electric Systems Reliability Task Force. \n  \nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public \nPresented by the Berkeley Center for New Media and Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium\, co-sponsored by the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies and CITRIS People and Robots (CPAR)\, in collaboration with the Berkeley Arts and Design initiative as part of A+D Mondays @ BAMPFA. \nGuy Hoffman\, Robotics Researcher\, Cornell University \nAs we continue to develop social robots designed for connectedness\, we struggle with paradoxes related to authenticity\, transience\, and replication. In this talk\, Cornell University robotics researcher Guy Hoffman links his fifteen years of experience designing social robots with hundred-year-old texts on transience\, replication\, and the fear of dying. Can there be meaningful relationships with robots who do not suffer natural decay? What would our families look like if we all chose to buy identical robotic family members? Could handcrafted robotics offer a relief from the mass replication of the robot’s physical body and thus also from the mass customization of social experiences? \nFor more information\, visit artsdesign.berkeley.edu. \nDr. Guy Hoffman is an Assistant Professor and the Mills Family Faculty Fellow in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. Prior to that he was an Assistant Professor at IDC Herzliya and co-director of the IDC Media Innovation Lab. Hoffman holds a Ph.D from MIT in the field of human-robot interaction. He heads the Human-Robot Collaboration and Companionship (HRC2) group\, studying the algorithms\, interaction schema\, and designs enabling close interactions between people and personal robots in the workplace and at home. Among others\, Hoffman developed the world’s first human-robot joint theater performance\, and the first real-time improvising human-robot Jazz duet. His research papers won several top academic awards\, including Best Paper awards at robotics conferences in 2004\, 2006\, 2008\, 2010\, 2013\, 2015\, 2018\, and 2019. His TEDx talk is one of the most viewed online talks on robotics\, watched more than 3 million times.

SUMMARY:ATC Lecture — Leonel Moura\, “Non-Human Art”
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \nPresented by Berkeley Center for New Media and Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium\, co-sponsored by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and CITRIS People and Robots (CPAR)\, in collaboration with the Berkeley Arts and Design initiative as part of A+D Mondays @ BAMPFA. \nCan a machine create its own art? This question\, raised around 2000 by Leonel Moura is at the core of his work with robotics and artificial intelligence. With the development of artificial intelligence of recent years\, the possibility of machines being intelligent but also creative is at the center of a debate on the future of humanity. Will machines take over? Or\, is there an exaggeration over their capacities? \nLeonel Moura is a European artist born in Lisbon\, Portugal\, who works with AI and robotics. In 2001 he created the first robot arm able to generate unique paintings operate by an ‘ant algorithm’. In 2003 a swarm of ‘Painting Robots’ were able to produce artworks based on simple rules and emergent behavior. Since then he has produced several artbots\, each time more autonomous and sophisticated. RAP (Robotic Action Painter) was created for a permanent exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, and Bebot for the Expo Astana\, Kazakhstan\, Grand Palais\, Paris and Gulbenkian Foundation\, Lisbon. ISU (The Poet Robot)\, generates poems and paintings with letters and words. In 2004 he launched the Symbiotic Art Manifest stating that “machines can make art” (http://www.leonelmoura.com/symbiotic-art-manifesto/). In 2007 the Robotarium\, the first zoo dedicated to robots and artificial life\, opened in Alverca. Other works include 3D sculptures\, interactive installations\, generative art\, augmented reality\, space art and the play R.U.R. from Karel Capek\, with 3 robots performing aside 3 human actors\, premiered in São Paulo in 2010. \nHe has published or participated in several books\, such as Robots and Art\, Springer; Nonhuman Art\, LXXL; Hiperdesign\, IADE; Robot Art\, Obidos Patrimonium; Man+robots: symbiotic art\, Institut d’Art Contemporain\, Villeurbanne. In 2009 he was appointed European Ambassador for Creativity and Innovation.

SUMMARY:The New Jim Code: Race\, Caceral Technoscience\, and Liberatory Imagination in Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:From everyday apps to complex algorithms\, technology has the potential to hide\, speed\, and even deepen discrimination\, while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to racist practices of a previous era. In this talk\, Dr. Ruha Benjamin\, Associate Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University\, presents the concept of the “New Jim Code” to explore a range of discriminatory designs that encode inequity. \n  \nAbout the Speaker  \nRuha Benjamin is an Associate Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University\, founder of the JUST DATA Lab\, and author of Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code (Polity 2019) and editor of Captivating Technology: Reimagining Race\, Carceral Technoscience\, and Liberatory Imagination in Everyday Life (Duke 2019) among many other publications. Dr. Benjamin’s work investigates the social dimensions of science\, medicine\, and technology with a focus on the relationship between innovation and inequity\, health and justice\, knowledge and power.
