SUMMARY:BIDS Data Science Lecture: Hate speech\, algorithms\, and digital connectivity
DESCRIPTION:The Online Hate Index (OHI) is a research partnership between UC Berkeley’s D-Lab and Google Jigsaw that seeks to improve society’s understanding of online hate speech (from sources such as YouTube\, Reddit\, Twitter and other social media sites)\, including its prevalence over time\, variation across regions and demographics\, our ability to measure it through crowdsourcing and algorithms\, and how to influence it through historical or future interventions. Through a combination of citizen science and machine learning\, the team is developing a nuanced measurement methodology that decomposes hate speech into various constituent components\, enabling it to be transformed into a continuous “hate speech scale\,” making it easier to rate\, evaluate and understand than a single omnibus question (i.e. “is this comment hate speech?”). \nThe project is setting new standards for the data science of hate speech\, with goals to 1) establish a theoretically-grounded definition of hate speech inclusive of research/policies/practice\, 2) develop and apply a multi-component labeling instrument\, 3) create a new crowdsourcing tool to scalably label comments\, 4) curate an open\, reliable multi-platform labeled hate speech corpus\, 5) grow existing data and tool repositories within principles of replicable and reproducible research\, enabling greater transparency and collaboration\, 6) create new knowledge through ethical online experimentation (and citizen science)\, and 7) refine AI models. The research team includes Geoff Bacon (Linguistics Ph.D. candidate); Nora Broege (Postdoc at Rutgers University); Chris Kennedy (Biostatistics Ph.D. student\, BIDS Fellow); and Alexander Sahn (Political Science Ph.D. candidate). \nUltimately\, we seek to understand the causal mechanisms for intervention and evaluation\, while defending free speech. SUMMARY:The role of data science in preventing and rescuing children from human trafficking
DESCRIPTION:How can artificial intelligence and machine learning help prevent child exploitation and human trafficking? Researchers and advocates in academia\, industry and the nonprofit world are coming together in this panel to discuss technological interventions to combat this issue. \nFor example\, there are now about 425\,000 entries of missing children in the National Center for Missing & Exploitation Children’s database. Last year alone\, the NCMEC CyberTipline received more than 18.4 million reports of possible child sexual exploitation. There is a much promise in AI/ML to enable the search of tens of millions of images in an effort to a) identify children and suspects; b) associate images with network addresses or domain names and c) to distinguish new images from known ones. Searching and investigating these reports in a timely manner is nearly impossible without the assistance of technology. Moreover\, AI/ML may be instrumental in the timely prevention of trafficking. DESCRIPTION:March 8\, 2019\nRegister on Eventbrite\nSince Ada Lovelace wrote the first computer program nearly 200 years ago\, women have contributed to the advancement of computing and helped pave the way for today’s artificial intelligence (AI). Today\, women are pushing the frontiers of AI in applications from robotics to recruiting\, from startups to venture capital. Equally far-reaching are women’s contributions to investigate AI’s social\, ethical\, and legal implications. For all the promise of new technology\, AI can exacerbate negative effects when it reinforces biases and inequalities. \nEstimates show that women comprise only 13.5 percent of those working in machine learning\, one of the fastest-growing technology fields. This well-recognized gender gap continues to deter talent and diminish the potential for the field\, which will affect innumerable aspects of our economy and everyday lives. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER TO ATTEND\n“Creating the Future of Nuclear Energy”\nAbout the speaker:\nRachel Slaybaugh is an Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California\, Berkeley. Prof. Slaybaugh’s research program is based in computational methods and applied to existing and advanced nuclear reactors\, nuclear non-proliferation and security\, and shielding applications. Slaybaugh is currently serving as a Program Director at ARPA-E. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Breakthrough Institute and at the Berkeley Institute of Data Science. At Berkeley\, Prof. Slaybaugh develops programs to train and inspire the next generation to innovate in clean energy\, including the Nuclear Innovation Bootcamp. \nSlaybaugh received a BS in Nuclear Engineering from Penn State where she served as a licensed nuclear reactor operator. She went on to the University of Wisconsin–Madison to earn an MS and a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics along with a certificate in Energy Analysis and Policy.  Slaybaugh’s Rickover Fellowship took her to Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory prior to joining Berkeley. His focus is on the workflow of healthcare service delivery with attention to the patient’s viewpoint of that experience. Dr. Valdes has been asked to be the medical director for the UC-Davis Digital Health Resource Center which is intended to be a catalogue of services to help ideas from both internal and external groups down their path of development. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER TO ATTEND\nAbout the speaker: \nRoya Pakzad serves as a Research Associate and Project Leader in Technology and Human Rights at Stanford University’s Global Digital Policy Incubator (GDPi). She also works with Stanford’s program in Iranian Studies on the role of information and communication technologies in human rights in Iran. Roya has worked on initiatives relating to everything from the role of technology in the Syrian refugee crisis to the human rights implications of Artificial Intelligence. She also researches the human rights policy and practices of technology companies and explores the role of technology in empowering marginalized groups. After three years working at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) as an electrical engineer\, she decided to converge her interests in technology and human rights. She holds degrees from Shahid Beheshti University (B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering)\, the University of Southern California (M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering) and Columbia University (M.A. in Human Rights Studies). She is the co-founder of Oasis Labs\, a team designing a platform to overcome the performance\, security\, and privacy limitations that hamper blockchain adoption. Her research interest lies in deep learning and security. She has studied diverse security and privacy issues in computer systems and networks\, including areas ranging from software security\, networking security\, database security\, distributed systems security\, applied cryptography\, to the intersection of machine learning and security. \nShe is the recipient of various awards including the MacArthur Fellowship\, the Guggenheim Fellowship\, the NSF CAREER Award\, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship\, the MIT Technology Review TR-35 Award\, the George Tallman Ladd Research Award\, the Okawa Foundation Research Award\, the Li Ka Shing Foundation Women in Science Distinguished Lecture Series Award\, the Faculty Research Award from IBM\, Google and other major tech companies\, and Best Paper Awards from top conferences. She obtained her Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley. Her goal is for robots to autonomously generate their behavior in a way that moves beyond functionality and formally accounts for interaction with humans. This combines optimal control\, machine learning\, and cognitive science\, with applications in collaborative manipulation and autonomous driving. DESCRIPTION:Register to Attend \nAbout the speaker: \nSamuel is the research director of the Digital Intelligence (DigIntel) Lab at IFTF\, a research associate at the Oxford Internet Institute\, and an associate member of Green Templeton College at the University of Oxford. He specializes in the study of automation/AI\, political communication\, and information warfare. He is also a co-founder and former research director of the Computational Propaganda (ComProp) research team at the University of Oxford and the University of Washington. He and his collaborators have done foundational research on the topics of online disinformation and political manipulation\, coining the terms ‘computational propaganda’ and ‘political bot.’ \nSam has been featured in publications such as the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and the Guardian and on CBS’ 60 Minutes\, BBC’s News at Ten\, and NPR’s On Point. His work has been presented to the US Congress\, the UK Parliament\, and NATO.
