SUMMARY:CITRIS Big Ideas Poster Session
DESCRIPTION:CITRIS Big Ideas poster session \nPresentation | April 7\, 2016 | 3-4 p.m. | Sutardja Dai Hall\, Kvamme Atrium\, 3rd floor \nRegister to Attend \nCITRIS is delighted to have five innovative finalists in the IT for Society category of the 2015-2016 Big Ideas@Berkeley competition\, which provides funding\, support\, and encouragement to interdisciplinary teams of students who have “big ideas.”  This year’s finalists were chosen from more than 50 applications across the UC campuses. The students will compete in a poster session for $20\,000 in prize money to further their work in information technology for societal benefit. Registration online will help us plan for refreshments. \nThe finalists are:Et al. Health. UC Berkeley\nThrough the use of natural language processing\, a number of open APIs\, and a user-centered design philosophy\, et al. Health is developing the world’s first doctor search tool based on a doctor’s clinical research experience. By providing honest\, accurate\, and friendly information about physicians who study rare diseases\, et al. Health’s mission is to help patients get useful and objective information that will help them get the treatment they need. \nLifted: Student Performance Measurement/Analysis/Reporting for Special Education Professionals. UC Berkeley\nAll from an iPad\, SPED professionals can manage a student’s legally-mandated annual individualized education plan; create/Conduct activities that align with student’s learning goals; receive actionable insight about student’s learning & behavioral trends\, enabling real-time modification to teaching methods; and produce data visualizations to share with parents and administrators. \nMindFull™: By Medical Students\, for Everyone. UC Irvine\nMindFull™ is a mobile application\, designed by medical students and professionals\, for the self-management of depression\, anxiety and stress or simply boosting of one’s mood. MindFull™ provides a list of combination therapies that users can like\, comment or mark as favorite\, which it automatically rearranges in order of community preference and feedback. Day-by-day regimens are presented as 6 “tiles”; each tile can flip upon a “double tap” to provide users with more information\, scientific citations\, and local resources and providers. \nPillPal. UC Berkeley\nPillPal is a simple application that integrates drug prices with a patient’s particular health insurance benefits to calculate a patient’s out-of-pocket costs. The application will feature three important services: upfront cost estimates\, value-based suggestions\, and price comparisons by location. \, PillPal will offer the patients the ability to compare prices for their medications by location so they can choose where they purchase their drugs based on not only proximity but cost as well. \nWildfire. UC Berkeley\nWildfire sends real-time notifications to your phone\, when a user reports dangerous activity nearby. Breaking local news delivered to you\, without you even needing to unlock your phone. Getting informed on Wildfire is not about who your friends are or who you follow\, rather it is about being notified and helping inform others in your community based on who is nearby. If an emergency occurs\, write an alert that is sent directly to your emergency contacts\, your nearby community\, a dashboard monitored by public safety officials\, all with one button. \n

SUMMARY:"International Petition against Autonomous Weapons" with Stuart Russell\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Stuart Russell is currently a professor of computer science\, director of the Center for Intelligent Systems\, and holder of the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering at UC Berkeley. He has published over 100 papers on a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. His books include “The Use of Knowledge in Analogy and Induction” (Pitman\, 1989)\, “Do the Right Thing: Studies in Limited Rationality” (with Eric Wefald\, MIT Press\, 1991)\, and “Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach” (with Peter Norvig\, Prentice Hall\, 1995\, 2003). \nAbstract: \nAutonomous weapons systems select and engage targets without human intervention; they become lethal when those targets include humans. LAWS might include\, for example\, armed quadcopters that can search for and eliminate enemy combatants in a city\, but do not include cruise missiles or remotely piloted drones for which humans make all targeting decisions. The artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics communities face an important ethical decision: whether to support or oppose the development of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS). \nThe UN has held three major meetings in Geneva under the auspices of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons\, or CCW\, to discuss the possibility of a treaty banning autonomous weapons. There is at present broad agreement on the need for “meaningful human control” over selection of targets and decisions to apply deadly force. Much work remains to be done on refining the necessary definitions and identifying exactly what should or should not be included in any proposed treaty. \nFree and open to the public. Register online by Monday for a free lunch at UC Berkeley. The CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. Each one-hour seminar starts at 12pm Pacific time and is hosted live at Sutardja Dai Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. \nRegister to Attend \n——- \nLive broadcast at http://video.citris.berkeley.edu/playlists/webcast/.\nAsk questions live on Twitter: #CITRISRE.  All talks may be viewed on\nour YouTube channel. \nLive webcasting of each CITRIS Research Exchange seminar is available at these CITRIS campuses: \nCITRIS @ Davis: 1127 Kemper Hall\, College of Engineering\, UC Davis\nCITRIS @ Merced: Science & Engineering II\, Room 302\, UC Merced\nCITRIS @ Santa Cruz: Room 595B\, Engineering 2 Building\, Baskin School of Engineering\, UC Santa Cruz

SUMMARY:"Mechanical Computing Redux for the Internet of Things" with Tsu-Jae King Liu\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:The proliferation of mobile electronic devices and the emergence of applications such as wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things have brought energy consumption to the fore of challenges for future information-processing devices. The energy efficiency of a digital logic integrated circuit is fundamentally limited by non-zero transistor off-state leakage current. Mechanical switches have zero leakage current and potentially can overcome this fundamental limit. This seminar will describe recent progress toward realizing the promise of ultra-low-power mechanical computing. \nTsu-Jae King Liu received the B.S.\, M.S.\, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. From 1992 to 1996 she was a Member of Research Staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Palo Alto\, CA). In August 1996 she joined the faculty of the University of California\, Berkeley\, where she is currently the TSMC Distinguished Professor in Microelectronics\, and Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Dr. Liu’s research awards include the DARPA Significant Technical Achievement Award (2000) for development of the FinFET\, the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award (2010) for contributions to nanoscale MOS transistors\, memory devices\, and MEMs devices\, the Intel Outstanding Researcher in Nanotechnology Award (2012)\, and the Semiconductor Industry Association Outstanding Research Award (2014). She has authored or co-authored close to 500 publications and holds over 90 U.S. patents\, and is a Fellow of the IEEE. Her research activities are presently in advanced materials\, process technology and devices for energy-efficient electronics. \nRegister to Attend \n————— \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:"The Future of Travel Demand" with Susan Handy\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Auto use is growing globally\, along with the environmental and societal problems it generates\, climate change most notably. A recent slowdown in the growth in vehicle-miles-traveled in the U.S. and Europe\, however\, has raised hopes that some parts of the world may have reached “peak driving.”  What is behind this recent slowdown\, and is it a true or temporary peak?  Answering these questions requires a close look at the behavior underlying these trends and at the numerous economic\, technological\, and cultural changes that are driving changes in travel behavior.  In this presentation\, I share findings from studies from UC Davis and elsewhere on some of the critical changes that are shaping the future of travel demand \nDr. Susan Handy is Chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy and the Director of the National Center for Sustainable Transportation at the University of California\, Davis.  She is internationally known for her research on the relationships between transportation and land use\, particularly the impact of neighborhood design on travel behavior.  Her current work focuses on bicycling as a mode of transportation and on strategies for reducing automobile dependence. \nRegister to Attend \n———————— \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:"Social media and social justice in Israel: Sounding the voice of the marginalized" by Prof. Amit Schejter\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, March 1\n Time: 12 – 1 pm\n Location: Room 250\, Sutardja Dai Hall\n Title: “Social media and social justice in Israel: Sounding the voice of the marginalized”\nSpeaker: Prof. Amit Schejter\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev \nPlease join us for a presentation from Prof. Amit Schejter where he will discuss “Social media and social justice in Israel: Sounding the voice of the marginalized.” \nSummary:\nThe emergence of new means of social media in recent years has made way for both utopian and dystopian discourses regarding their impact on the common good in general and on democratization and social participation in public life in particular. This conversation\, however\, rarely discusses the least advantaged elements of society that have traditionally been sidelined in political discourse. \nRooted in a redistributive justice frame that challenges the accepted utilitarian capitalist normative choices that guide Western societies\, this talk ties a theory of new media to the social justice theories of John Rawls and Amartya Sen and proposes a different prescription for the role of media in contemporary society and for the priorities media policymakers should make in light of new media developments. Using distinct case studies in which the use of media by marginalized groups in Israeli society is highlighted — Bedouins\, Palestinians\, refugees and migrants — the talk demonstrates the role of new media in the life of marginalized communities and their potential.

SUMMARY:"Web of Systems" with Florian Michahelles\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Web of Systems: Seamless collaboration both among machines and between machines and humans\nJust imagine\, every sensor\, and every machine has its own IP address. This opens formidable opportunities\, for instance\, in manufacturing\, building technologies\, energy management and healthcare. In order to realize this vision: machines have to speak the same language. This talk will introduce a machine-centric interpretation of the Internet of Things: in a Web of Systems sensor nodes and machines will decide themselves where to process and who to share data with. The “Web of Systems” is just about to move from the lab into pilot projects. This talk will present some of the recent outcomes of the Siemens’ lab in Berkeley in collaboration with UC Berkeley.\nBiography: \nFlorian Michahelles is the head of research group at Siemens Web of Things. \nRegister to Attend \n—————- \nFree and open to the public.
