SUMMARY:"Machines of Loving Grace" John Markoff\, New York Times
DESCRIPTION:The CITRIS People and Robots Initiative Presents: \nA Distinguished Lecture by John Markoff of the New York Times \n“Machines of Loving Grace”\nDate: Thursday\, May 7\, 2015   |  Time: 11am-12pm\nLocation: Banatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley \n  \nIn Machines of Loving Grace\, New York Times reporter John Markoff\, the first reporter to cover the World Wide Web\, offers a sweeping history of the complicated and evolving relationship between humans and computers. Over the recent years\, the pace of technological change has accelerated dramatically\, reintroducing this difficult ethical quandary with newer and far weightier consequences. As Markoff chronicles the history of automation\, from the birth of the artificial intelligence and intelligence augmentation communities in the 1950s\, to the modern day brain trusts at Google and Apple in Silicon Valley\, and on to the expanding tech corridor between Boston and New York\, he traces the different ways developers have addressed this fundamental problem and urges them to carefully consider the consequences of their work. \n  \nWe are on the verge of a technological revolution\, Markoff argues\, and robots will profoundly transform the way our lives are organized. Developers must now draw a bright line between what is human and what is machine\, or risk upsetting the delicate balance between them. \n  \nRegister to Attend \nLive broadcast at http://video.citris.berkeley.edu/playlists/webcast. SUMMARY:Lise Getoor\, Big Graph Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Seminar title: Big Graph Data Science \nBanatao Auditorium\, 310 Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nWednesday\, May 6\, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST) \nREGISTER \nAbstract:\nOne of the challenges in big data analytics lies in being able to reason collectively about extremely large\, heterogeneous\, incomplete\, and noisy interlinked data. We need data science techniques which can represent and reason effectively with this form of rich and multi-relational graph data. In this talk\, I will describe some common inference patterns needed for graph data including: collective classification (predicting missing labels for nodes)\, link prediction (predicting potential edges)\, and entity resolution (determining when two nodes refer to the same underlying entity). I will describe some key capabilities required to solve these problems\, and finally I will describe a highly scalable open-source probabilistic programming language being developed within my group to solve these challenges. \nSpeaker Bio: \nLise Getoor is a professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. Her research areas include machine learning\, data integration and reasoning under uncertainty\, with an emphasis on graph and network data. She is a AAAI Fellow\, serves on the Computing Research Association and International Machine Learning Society boards\, was co-chair of ICML 2011\, is a recipient of an NSF Career Award and eight best paper and best student paper awards. She was recently recognized as one of the top ten emerging researchers leaders in data mining and data science based on citation and impact\, according to KDD Nuggets.  She received her PhD from Stanford University\, her MS from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and her BS from the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and was a professor at the University of Maryland\, College Park from 2001–2013. \n  \n  \n  \n\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. Each one-hour seminar starts at 12pm PST and is hosted live in the Banatao Auditorium at Sutardja Dai Hall on the UC Berkeley campus (*unless otherwise noted). Lunch is provided at UC Berkeley for those who register in advance. \nLive webcasting of each CITRIS Research Exchange seminar is available at these CITRIS campuses and also online at http://video.citris.berkeley.edu/playlists/webcast: \n\nCITRIS @ Davis: 1131 Kemper Hall\, College of Engineering\, UC Davis\nCITRIS @ Merced: 322-Willow\, Classroom and Office Building (COB)\, UC Merced\nCITRIS @ Santa Cruz: Room 595B\, Engineering 2 Building\, Baskin School of Engineering\, UC Santa Cruz\n\nAsk questions live via Twitter using #CITRISRE. All talks may be viewed on our YouTube channel at least a week after the event. \nThe full schedule for the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series can be found on the CITRIS site.  \n

SUMMARY:Regis B. Kelly\, Innovating Innovatively
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Title: Innovating Innovatively at UC \nBanatao Auditorium\, 310 Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nWednesday\, April 29\, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST) \nREGISTER \nAbstract: \nOur University was created by Californians to improve the quality of their lives. As a research university we fulfill that role by converting our amazingly creative discoveries into practical benefits for society.  An efficient way to provide benefits while simultaneously promoting job and economic growth is for our scientists to create startup companies.  UC fosters its startups through mentoring and providing access to incubator lab space and seed funding.  In large part through the creation of its four Institutes for Science and Innovation\, UC has massively expanded its commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship and is on its way to being preeminent in its mission to serve society. Success in doing good will hopefully lead to enhanced government support of our efforts and help us attract even finer students. \nSpeaker Biography: \nRegis B. Kelly is the Director of QB3\, one of four California Institutes for Science and Innovation\, created by the California Legislature to strengthen the academic foundation of its technology-based industries. QB3 is the only one of the four devoted exclusively to biology and to the life science industries. It is an innovation center made up of over 200 quantitative biologists at three northern California campuses (UCB\, UCSC & UCSF) working at the interface of the physical and biological sciences and a team of professionals converting its discoveries into practical benefits for society. \n\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. SUMMARY:Can we build the grid from the bottom up for 2050?
DESCRIPTION:The electric power grid will need to be dramatically different by 2050. The existing grid is centralized and hierarchical. It assumes generation can be accurately controlled\, demand is predictable and inflexible and energy cannot be stored. In this talk we propose a data-driven bottom up system design for the power grid that does not require these assumptions.

SUMMARY:Patricia Moore\, Design for all: Inclusivity by design
DESCRIPTION:Design for all: Inclusivity by design with Patricia Moore\n  \nWEDNESDAY\, APRIL 8\, 2015\nLecture: 5:00 – 6:15 p.m.\nReception & Student Project Demos: 6:15 – 7:00 p.m.\nBanatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall \nCreating for our comfort\, providing for our existence\, responding to the daily challenges that impact our lives\, is a matter of design. There has never been a more exciting or vital time for the presence of design\, and the need for “humanism” in design has never been more crucial to our future. \nBy focusing our talents on the needs of each individual as equal\, designers have given birth to a new order: “Inclusivity By Design.” This “Design For All” philosophic challenge doesn’t simply ask “Why?” but rather\, “Why not?” \nDesigner and gerontologist Patricia Moore will examine the potential for this new order by design and explore the opportunities for our lifespan autonomy. \nCo-sponsored by: Berkeley Center for New Media | CITRIS Data & Democracy Initiative | CITRIS Mobile App Challenge | Health@CITRIS | Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Stavros Vougioukas\, Automated Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Title: Automated Agriculture: Focus on Harvesting \nRoom 250 Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nWednesday\, March 18 \, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST) \nREGISTER \nAbstract:\nMechanizing the hand harvesting of fresh market crops constitutes one of the biggest challenges to the sustainability of the U.S. fruit and vegetable industry.Depending on the crop\, labor contributes up to 60% of the variable production cost and recent labor shortages have led to loss of production and reduction of planted acreage in several crops. Innovation is desperately needed in the design of mechanical/robotic harvesters and harvest-aid machines for delicate fresh-market crops. This talk will discuss the challenges involved\, and will present new approaches toward model-based design and control of high-throughput harvesting systems\, which are inspired by robotics and automation science. \nStavros G. Vougioukas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at UC Davis and works in the area of mechanization and automation of specialty crops\, focusing on the design\, development\, and testing of actuators\, sensors and control systems for optimal management of inputs and products.  \n  \n  \n\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues.
