SUMMARY:Reza Abbaschian\, Trends in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Education
DESCRIPTION:Materials research over the last three decades has led to significant advances in the manufacturing of new materials with tailored and unique properties for a variety of applications. These advances have come about mostly because of a highly influential National Research Council study titled “Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) for the 1990’s: Maintaining Competitiveness in the Age of Materials\,” that defined and delineated MSE around four basic elements of synthesis and processing\, structure\, properties and performance.  In this presentation\, an overview of the recent trends in incorporating these four basic elements in MSE education will be given\, followed by an example of the MSE program at the University of California\, Riverside. The program offers interdisciplinary BS\, MS and PhD degrees in MSE. At the undergraduate level\, the program integrates with all five engineering departments in the Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE).  This new approach allows students to have meaningful interactions with engineers from other engineering disciplines who ultimately are the “end-users” of materials.  At the graduate level\, the UCR MSE program integrates with other disciplines such as Physics and Chemistry. \nSpeaker Bio: \nReza Abbaschian began his tenure as Dean of the Bourns College of Engineering and Distinguished Professor and William R. Johnson\, Jr. Professor in September 2005 at UC Riverside. Prior to his appointment at UCR Dr. Abbaschian was the Vladimir A. Grodsky Professor of Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of Florida\, where he also served as Chair of the Department for 16 years. During his tenure\, the Department rose to a U.S. News & World Report top-ten ranking for both undergraduate and graduate education. \nDr. Abbaschian received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California\, Berkeley\, M.S. in metallurgical engineering from Michigan Technological University\, and BSc in mining and metallurgy from Tehran University. He has published more than 250 scientific articles on subjects ranging from metal processing to composites\, solidification and high temperature-high pressure growth of jewelry diamonds\, which led to the formation of Gemesis Diamond Company. He holds five patents and eight patent disclosures and has authored eight books\, including the recently published fourth edition of Physical Metallurgy Principles. \nDr. Abbaschian is a past President of ASM International\, the largest materials society. His awards include the TMS Educator Award\, Structural Material Division’s Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award\, TMS Leadership Award\, ASEE Donald E. Marlowe Award\, Davis Productivity Award of the State of Florida\, and the Albert Sauveur Achievement Award which he received on October 2013 in Montreal\, Canada. The award recognized him as “outstanding scientist and researcher in solidification fundamentals and materials processing\, educator and leader in advancing the materials profession.” He has been elected a Fellow of ASM\, TMS and AAAS. \n  \nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. DESCRIPTION:The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Social Apps Lab at UC Berkeley create information technology solutions for many of our most pressing social\, environmental\, and health care problems. To promote innovation\, community service\, and career development among UC Berkeley students\, CITRIS\, the Social Apps Lab\, and Berkeley Center for New Media are sponsoring a semester-long competition for the best mobile apps that address identified needs in Health\, Energy\, Climate & Environment\, Civic Tech & Smart Communities or Education. \nRSVP to attend! \nThis challenge encourages teams of UC Berkeley students to develop innovative mobile applications for today’s most pressing societal needs. Through a rigorous 3-month process\, students will design\, prototype and pitch their ideas. Participants will receive coaching and guidance from CITRIS faculty and staff\, entrepreneurs\, developers\, nonprofit leaders and prospective clients. The challenge will culminate in a public Demo Day at the end of the semester where teams will give short presentations and prizes will be awarded in various categories. Teams may win up to $1\,000 in scholarship funds and preferred consideration for application to Berkeley startup incubator programs. \nStudents can participate in the challenge by either registering in late January or taking a 3-unit course\, New Media 190/290P\, taught by Dan Gillete. \nThe Info Session & Ideation Summit will help facilitate the ideation and development of project ideas\, an info session followed by a roundtable will be held to help students define potential areas of interests for their apps. Domain experts from our societal impact areas will attend to provide advice and share their experiences.

Core topics include pedestrian safety\, urban beauty\, and public transit optimization. DESCRIPTION:UCSC has built the Cancer Genomics Hub (CGHub) for the US National Cancer Institute\, designed to hold data for all major NCI projects. To date it has served more than more than 15 petabytes of data to the research committee. Cancer is exceedingly complex\, with thousands of subtypes involving an immense number of different combinations of mutations. The only way we will understand it is to gather together DNA data from many thousands of cancer genomes so that we have the statistical power to distinguish between recurring combinations of mutations that drive cancer progression and “passenger” mutations that occur by random chance. Currently\, with the exception of a few international research projects\, most cancer genomics research is taking place in research silos\, with little opportunity for data sharing. If this trend continues\, we lose an incredible opportunity. \nSoon cancer genome sequencing will be widespread in clinical practice\, making it possible in principle to study as many as a million cancer genomes.  For these data to also have impact on understanding cancer\, we must begin soon to move data into a network of compatible global cloud storage and computing systems\, and design mechanisms that allow genome and clinical data to be used in research with appropriate patient consent. The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health was created to address this problem. Our Data Working Group is designing the future of large-scale genomics for cancer and other diseases. This is an opportunity we cannot turn away from. \nReference: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Pubs/TechRpts/2012/EECS-2012-211.html \nBiography:\nDavid Haussler develops new statistical and algorithmic methods to explore the molecular function\, evolution\, and disease process in the human genome\, integrating comparative and high-throughput genomics data to study gene structure\, function\, and regulation. He is credited with pioneering the use in genomics of hidden Markov models (HMMs)\, stochastic context-free grammars\, and discriminative kernel methods. As a collaborator on the international Human Genome Project\, his team posted the first publicly available computational assembly of the human genome sequence on the Internet on July 7\, 2000. His team subsequently developed the UCSC Genome Browser\, a web-based tool that is used extensively in biomedical research and serves\, along with the European Ensembl platform\, virtually all large-scale vertebrate genomics projects\, including NHGRI’s ENCODE project\, the 1000 Genomes Project\, and NCI’s TCGA.
