SUMMARY:Technology and Cultural Preservation with Nicola Lercari\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: Technology and Cultural Preservation\nSpeaker: Nicola Lercari\nDate: October 26\, 2016\, Wednesday\, 12-1pm\nLocation: Banatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\n \nNicola Lercari is Assistant Professor of World Heritage at UC Merced. He investigates digital preservation of heritage\, cross-media systems for museums\, and the analytical and interpretative role of the visualization of the past. \nClimate change\, prolonged drought periods\, the lack of cultural awareness and funding for physical conservation pose severe threats to the preservation of California’s natural and cultural heritage. Digital technologies of data capture and data curation provide viable solutions for the documentation\, interpretation\, and preservation of heritage sites. Nonetheless\, more work needs to be done to understand the effects of new\, emerging technologies in creating constituencies engaged in the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Thus\, this talk explores the social role of augmented reality (A/R)\, mobile apps\, and crowdsourcing platforms for citizen science\, in fostering cultural awareness and communication among communities of park and museum visitors. This presentation displays the preliminary results of the CITRIS-funded research project Bodie Digital Community – Connect with your Past. The ideas\, methods\, technologies\, and initiatives\, we designed in this project\, provide an opportunity to preserve Bodie for years to come. At the same time\, this project is a starting point to create social technologies for heritage preservation that will contribute to protect many other natural and cultural places worldwide. \nRegister \n \nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. SUMMARY:Future of Distributed Energy Resources with Ryan Hanley\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: Future of Distributed Energy Resources\nSpeaker: Ryan Hanley\nDate: October 19\, 2016\, Wednesday\, 12-1pm\nLocation: Banatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nRyan Hanley is the VP of Grid Engineering Solutions at SolarCity. \nDistributed energy resources (DER)\, and the customers who deploy them\, are no longer new to the energy space. Consumer-sited DERs such as rooftop solar\, stationary batteries\, electric vehicles\, smart inverters\, and dynamic loads are showing up in homes and business across the country\, even making appearances at booths within Consumer Electronics Shows. In fact\, Navigant research forecasts that DERs will more than double in penetration in the next 7 years in the United States\, growing three times faster than new central station energy generation. While DERs no longer sit on the sidelines with consumers\, the industry still has progress to make before fully unlocking the technical potential of these assets to improve grid design\, operations\, affordability\, and consumer satisfaction. \nIn this CITRIS seminar\, Ryan Hanley will highlight the potential that distributed energy resources hold for driving innovation in grid design\, planning\, and operations. Ryan will speak to SolarCity’s new cutting edge research\, product development\, and field deployments and while identifying opportunities for energy industry stakeholders to tackle some of the obstacles that inhibit the full utilization of DERs. \nRegister \n  \n \nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. SUMMARY:Kenichi Soga\, UC Berkeley\, CITRIS Research Exchange + Resilience Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Design\, construction\, maintenance and upgrading of civil engineering infrastructure requires fresh thinking to minimize use of materials\, energy and labor. This can be achieved by understanding the performance of the infrastructure\, both during its construction and throughout its design life\, through innovative monitoring. Advances in sensor systems offer intriguing possibilities to radically alter methods of condition assessment and monitoring of infrastructure. This talk will focus on the future of infrastructure; the rich information obtained from embedded sensors within infrastructure will act as a catalyst for new design\, construction\, operation and maintenance processes for integrated infrastructure systems linked directly with user behavior patterns. New generation sensor technologies offer intriguing possibilities that can alter the paradigms underlying existing methods of condition assessment and monitoring. The talk will introduce several case studies of applying technologies for monitoring the conditions of civil infrastructure and discuss how engineering decisions can made from the new sets of data. \n\n\n\n\nDate\nPhoto\nSpeaker\nTitle\nAffiliation\nTime\nLocation\nSponsors\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nOctober 12\, 2016\, Wednesday\n\nKenichi Soga\nSensors for Smart Civil Infrastructure\nUC Berkeley\n12-1pm\nBanatao Auditorium\, Sutardja Dai Hall\nSustainable Infrastructures\,CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series\, CITRIS +ITS + TRUST + FORCES\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Resilience Series is free and open to the public and sponsored by CITRIS and the Banatao Institute\, the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) and The Team for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology (TRUST) and Foundations Of Resilient CybEr-physical Systems (FORCES). \nCITRIS Research Exchange\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. SUMMARY:"International Petition against Autonomous Weapons" with Stuart Russell\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Stuart Russell is currently a professor of computer science\, director of the Center for Intelligent Systems\, and holder of the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering at UC Berkeley. He has published over 100 papers on a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. His books include “The Use of Knowledge in Analogy and Induction” (Pitman\, 1989)\, “Do the Right Thing: Studies in Limited Rationality” (with Eric Wefald\, MIT Press\, 1991)\, and “Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach” (with Peter Norvig\, Prentice Hall\, 1995\, 2003). \nAbstract: \nAutonomous weapons systems select and engage targets without human intervention; they become lethal when those targets include humans. LAWS might include\, for example\, armed quadcopters that can search for and eliminate enemy combatants in a city\, but do not include cruise missiles or remotely piloted drones for which humans make all targeting decisions. The artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics communities face an important ethical decision: whether to support or oppose the development of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS). \nThe UN has held three major meetings in Geneva under the auspices of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons\, or CCW\, to discuss the possibility of a treaty banning autonomous weapons. There is at present broad agreement on the need for “meaningful human control” over selection of targets and decisions to apply deadly force. Much work remains to be done on refining the necessary definitions and identifying exactly what should or should not be included in any proposed treaty. \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:"Mechanical Computing Redux for the Internet of Things" with Tsu-Jae King Liu\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:The proliferation of mobile electronic devices and the emergence of applications such as wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things have brought energy consumption to the fore of challenges for future information-processing devices. The energy efficiency of a digital logic integrated circuit is fundamentally limited by non-zero transistor off-state leakage current. Mechanical switches have zero leakage current and potentially can overcome this fundamental limit. This seminar will describe recent progress toward realizing the promise of ultra-low-power mechanical computing. \nTsu-Jae King Liu received the B.S.\, M.S.\, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. From 1992 to 1996 she was a Member of Research Staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Palo Alto\, CA). In August 1996 she joined the faculty of the University of California\, Berkeley\, where she is currently the TSMC Distinguished Professor in Microelectronics\, and Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Dr. Liu’s research awards include the DARPA Significant Technical Achievement Award (2000) for development of the FinFET\, the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award (2010) for contributions to nanoscale MOS transistors\, memory devices\, and MEMs devices\, the Intel Outstanding Researcher in Nanotechnology Award (2012)\, and the Semiconductor Industry Association Outstanding Research Award (2014). She has authored or co-authored close to 500 publications and holds over 90 U.S. patents\, and is a Fellow of the IEEE. Her research activities are presently in advanced materials\, process technology and devices for energy-efficient electronics. \nRegister to Attend \n————— \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:"The Future of Travel Demand" with Susan Handy\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Auto use is growing globally\, along with the environmental and societal problems it generates\, climate change most notably. A recent slowdown in the growth in vehicle-miles-traveled in the U.S. and Europe\, however\, has raised hopes that some parts of the world may have reached “peak driving.”  What is behind this recent slowdown\, and is it a true or temporary peak?  Answering these questions requires a close look at the behavior underlying these trends and at the numerous economic\, technological\, and cultural changes that are driving changes in travel behavior.  In this presentation\, I share findings from studies from UC Davis and elsewhere on some of the critical changes that are shaping the future of travel demand \nDr. Susan Handy is Chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy and the Director of the National Center for Sustainable Transportation at the University of California\, Davis.  She is internationally known for her research on the relationships between transportation and land use\, particularly the impact of neighborhood design on travel behavior.  Her current work focuses on bicycling as a mode of transportation and on strategies for reducing automobile dependence. \nRegister to Attend \n———————— \nFree and open to the public. Register online by Monday for a free lunch at UC Berkeley. The CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. Each one-hour seminar starts at 12pm Pacific time and is hosted live at Sutardja Dai Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. \nLive broadcast at http://video.citris.berkeley.edu/playlists/webcast/.\nAsk questions live on Twitter: #CITRISRE.  All talks may be viewed on\nour YouTube channel. \nLive webcasting of each CITRIS Research Exchange seminar is available at these CITRIS campuses: \nCITRIS @ Davis: 1127 Kemper Hall\, College of Engineering\, UC Davis\nCITRIS @ Merced: Science & Engineering II\, Room 302\, UC Merced\nCITRIS @ Santa Cruz: Room 595B\, Engineering 2 Building\, Baskin School of Engineering\, UC Santa Cruz \n———————— \n \nThis talk is also a part of our Resilience Seminar Series. This series is free and open to the public and sponsored by The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS)\, the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) and The Team for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology(TRUST).

SUMMARY:"Web of Systems" with Florian Michahelles\, CITRIS Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Web of Systems: Seamless collaboration both among machines and between machines and humans\nJust imagine\, every sensor\, and every machine has its own IP address. This opens formidable opportunities\, for instance\, in manufacturing\, building technologies\, energy management and healthcare. In order to realize this vision: machines have to speak the same language. This talk will introduce a machine-centric interpretation of the Internet of Things: in a Web of Systems sensor nodes and machines will decide themselves where to process and who to share data with. The “Web of Systems” is just about to move from the lab into pilot projects. This talk will present some of the recent outcomes of the Siemens’ lab in Berkeley in collaboration with UC Berkeley.\nBiography: \nFlorian Michahelles is the head of research group at Siemens Web of Things. \nRegister to Attend \n—————- \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Lise Getoor\, Big Graph Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Seminar title: Big Graph Data Science \nBanatao Auditorium\, 310 Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nWednesday\, May 6\, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST) \nREGISTER \nAbstract:\nOne of the challenges in big data analytics lies in being able to reason collectively about extremely large\, heterogeneous\, incomplete\, and noisy interlinked data. We need data science techniques which can represent and reason effectively with this form of rich and multi-relational graph data. In this talk\, I will describe some common inference patterns needed for graph data including: collective classification (predicting missing labels for nodes)\, link prediction (predicting potential edges)\, and entity resolution (determining when two nodes refer to the same underlying entity). I will describe some key capabilities required to solve these problems\, and finally I will describe a highly scalable open-source probabilistic programming language being developed within my group to solve these challenges. \nSpeaker Bio: \nLise Getoor is a professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. Her research areas include machine learning\, data integration and reasoning under uncertainty\, with an emphasis on graph and network data. She is a AAAI Fellow\, serves on the Computing Research Association and International Machine Learning Society boards\, was co-chair of ICML 2011\, is a recipient of an NSF Career Award and eight best paper and best student paper awards. She was recently recognized as one of the top ten emerging researchers leaders in data mining and data science based on citation and impact\, according to KDD Nuggets.  She received her PhD from Stanford University\, her MS from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and her BS from the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and was a professor at the University of Maryland\, College Park from 2001–2013. \n  \n  \n  \n\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues. SUMMARY:Regis B. Kelly\, Innovating Innovatively
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Title: Innovating Innovatively at UC \nBanatao Auditorium\, 310 Sutardja Dai Hall\, UC Berkeley\nWednesday\, April 29\, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST) \nREGISTER \nAbstract: \nOur University was created by Californians to improve the quality of their lives. As a research university we fulfill that role by converting our amazingly creative discoveries into practical benefits for society.  An efficient way to provide benefits while simultaneously promoting job and economic growth is for our scientists to create startup companies.  UC fosters its startups through mentoring and providing access to incubator lab space and seed funding.  In large part through the creation of its four Institutes for Science and Innovation\, UC has massively expanded its commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship and is on its way to being preeminent in its mission to serve society. Success in doing good will hopefully lead to enhanced government support of our efforts and help us attract even finer students. \nSpeaker Biography: \nRegis B. Kelly is the Director of QB3\, one of four California Institutes for Science and Innovation\, created by the California Legislature to strengthen the academic foundation of its technology-based industries. QB3 is the only one of the four devoted exclusively to biology and to the life science industries. It is an innovation center made up of over 200 quantitative biologists at three northern California campuses (UCB\, UCSC & UCSF) working at the interface of the physical and biological sciences and a team of professionals converting its discoveries into practical benefits for society. \n\nFree and open to the public\, the CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series is a weekly dialogue highlighting leading voices on societal-scale research issues.
