Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT has become a global sensation since its launch in November 2022, allowing users to generate anything from essay drafts to vacation itineraries. According to Ken Goldberg, former director of CITRIS People and Robots, the program’s ability to demonstrate creativity is leading many AI experts to question how we understand intelligence.

In April, CITRIS and the Banatao Institute are co-hosting, alongside the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory (BAIR), a series of four Research Exchange seminars by experts in AI. Speakers include CITRIS principal investigators and computer scientists Michael Jordan and Stuart Russell, as well as psychologist Alison Gopnik and law professor Pamela Samuelson.

UC Berkeley will present a total of seven lectures on the status and future of AI in spring 2023.
