CITRIS is delighted to co-sponsor four UC Berkeley undergraduate students this summer as part of the new Sustainability Champions program.
This project is led by Jason Trager, Jacqueline Hsu, and Paul Wright. The goals of the program include:
- Assisting undergraduate students to gain employment in industry sectors with skills relevant to the world’s biggest challenges in the sustainability and environmental sectors.
- Demonstrating the utility of having individuals, who are trained in sustainability assessment and implementation, on staff in corporate environments, and do so through a combined education and internship promotion process.
- Placing the program-accepted undergraduates into a year-long process of training, solving problems on campus, and interning on sustainability-related projects at a corporate partner.
- Conducting a graduate student-led Sustainability Boot Camp, where the undergraduates will learn about several subjects in sustainability business and policy assessment, as well as costing, accounting, and engineering principles associated with sustainability.
- Soliciting corporate partners who will provide the sustainability internship and take-over funding the internship once TGIF funding has been expended.
During the summer of 2013, these students will work with four organizations to develop their skills in the business of sustainability, providing a valuable service to the companies as well as learning how to help industry become and stay green.

The Sustainability Champions will work with: Awesome Bars, kW Engineering, Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, and Brush with Bamboo. For the first year, the interns are funded by The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF). Next summer, companies will pay for the interns directly. CITRIS works to provide a training infrastructure for interns and help them do outreach on how their training has helped them to gain jobs in sustainability.
