The CITRIS Foundry welcomes ten new teams covering a variety of tech fields from artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to 3D mapping and education tools. The six-month CITRIS Foundry incubator program offers teams coaching, resources, and access to the CITRIS Invention Lab makerspace and the Berkeley Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory. The program begins in August 2020 and ends in February 2021.
A description of each summer 2020 CITRIS Foundry company teams follows.
Contexto
Founders: Siggi Bachmann, Vassoula Vasiliou, Ezequiel Williams
Contexto aims to utilize real-time 3D mapping capabilities of AR-enabled mobile devices to enable fine-grained spatial tagging of data. Though elements of these capabilities exists, indoor 3D mapping requires expensive 3D laser scanners and trained technicians. Then, one can tag these maps with different media assets and notes, but this was a very tedious and complex process. Now, a non-technical user can accomplish both of these tasks on a single mobile device automatically.
CoronAI
Founders: Anupam Tiwari, Anushka Purohit
CoronAI allows for the real-time 3D screening of internal organs without the need for bulky, expensive machines. Coupled with its machine learning models, CoronAI is able to extract these images into real-time footage of the lung, which expands and contracts as the user breathes. This is a one of its kind application, and no one has explored this field yet. The team thus hopes to pave the future of independent medical diagnostics for patients, reducing the pressure on healthcare workers.
Dentia
Founders: Ellie Babaie, Stefan Habelitz
Dental cavities are the most common chronic infectious disease in children, adults and seniors in the United States. Dentia’s innovation is based on the restoratives which promote mineralization to repair and heal the damaged tissue. The team’s exclusive biomimetic restoratives manufacturing can be implemented into different dental applications such as enamel, and dentin. Their special innovative technology therefore leads to functional repair which results in restoring the physiology of teeth.
KovaDX
Founders: Yaw Ansong Jnr, Tim Adamson
KovaDx is making the diagnosis of blood cellular morphological diseases quick and affordable by combining 3D phase imaging with deep learning. The team’s work is special because it grants access to faster, easier to use diagnostic and monitoring tools.
Myntor
Founders: Nathan Poon, Ron Thalanki, Sepe Rafiei
Myntor builds a multi-level AI-tutor named Bumblebee capable of providing personalized content feedback instantaneously to students. The team has embedded Bumblebee into a novel AP Calculus course that uses real-world examples to teach fundamental calculus principles. Initial tests indicate that Bumblebee answers questions 86% faster than Khan Academy or email responses from teachers (2019). Bumblebee’s current iteration is likely even more successful now due to recent innovations. Using Bumblebee, students thus increased AP scores by an average of 41% in 4 days. Average day-over-day improvement was 14% after the first day and 34% after the second day.
NeuroHealth Technologies
Founders: Michael Cole, Roger Quy
NeuroHealth Technologies has an IP that enables augmented teletherapy. This technology will provide clinicians with continuous emotional data about their patients during their sessions to help enrich their therapeutic insilights. The therapist continuously monitors this information in order to acquire a better understanding of the patient’s changing mental state throughout the session.
New Age Link
Founders: William Hinds, Ibrahim Hinds
New Age Link plans to employ a 360 virtual reality environment to create pathways for renewable energy training. Additionally, the team plans to develop a database that breaks technical and language barriers that to various national and global intellectual property advancements related to energy and the environment. In effect, these initiatives will empower persons in remote areas without access to adequate infrastructure and educational resources to be able to leverage technology to create their own unique solutions to meet primary, secondary and tertiary needs.
scholarHub
Founders: Abdallah El Idrissi, Thu Nguyen
To democratize education, ScholarHub creates a multinational online education, class management, and grading platform accessible and affordable to any kind of school. The open-source community inspired Discussion Hub to let professors easily share content they’ve made. All interested students can also use Discussion Hub free of charge. Subsequently, Discussion Hub serves to narrow the widening gap in education quality between private and public schools. This platform’s design is user friendly and simple to use, allowing also for cheating prevention in online exams and student feedback in professor evaluations.
SportsVue
Founders: Pedro Pachuca Rodriguez, James Li
SportsVue is developing an accurate, low-cost concussion detection device that instantly notifies coaches and parents about potential concussions. Through discreet device lights and phone notifications, SportsVue’s device instantly informs coaches and parents about concussion risks. While using this tool, coaches can pull players for safety evaluations and parents will always know the status of their children.
UI Flow
Founders: Daniel Sol Eun, Eric Rowell
UI Flow builds software as a service product for businesses to build front-end applications. The team’s product provides a single development environment to front-end app builders. This produce will therefore connect components visually with the proprietary flow editor and collaborate with domain experts and designers, defining business logic and aesthetics of applications.
