UC Berkeley’s Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Claude Steele visited the Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory and CITRIS Invention Lab today, December 19th, 2014.
NanoLab Executive Director William Flounders led an immersive tour of the nanofabrication facility, which features more than 15,000 square feet of Class 100 and Class1000 cleanroom space in Sutardja Dai Hall. The NanoLab is a shared research center for more than 100 principal investigators and 500 academic and industrial researchers. The tour then moved to the CITRIS Invention Lab with presentations and project demos by active student users of this popular prototyping and instructional space, including the Fall 2014 Interactive Device Design and User Interface Design classes taught by Professor Bjoern Hartmann and Professor Paul Wright, and Professor Eric Paulos (respectively).
Student projects presented included:
- Astute: Path detection and analytics for museum visitors.
- CharmBits: Modular circuit wearables to teach children the basics of electronics.
- Punch: A fully-automated wine fermentation monitor that helps protect fine wines.
- SmartSocket: A smart prosthetic socket that visualizes BLE-transmitted sensor data via a web client to help prosthetists make informed decisions when fitting and adjusting prosthetics.
- ToastBoard: An instrumented breadboard that helps debug circuits by displaying connectivity and voltage information both onboard and via a web client.
