When will we see fully autonomous cars on public roadways? CITRIS principal investigator and UC Berkeley professor Alexandre Bayen was one of three experts interviewed by The Wall Street Journal about the challenges still facing self-driving personal vehicles.

“Humans are even more complex to model and anticipate in many ways,” Bayen said. “The field of mixed autonomy (in which humans interact with machines) is still at its infancy, hence the ability of a fully automated vehicle to interact with an unknown human is still a question not fully solved by machine learning.”
