New Media
In keeping with its mission to develop technology for the benefit of society, CITRIS has undertaken initiatives in New Media. This theme aims to provide a forum for engineers, architects, social scientists, and humanists to discuss pressing problems from diverse perspectives.
Innovations in information technology have enormous potential to enhance our experience and understanding of art and to safeguard works of past generations. They can also lead to unexpected impacts in seemingly unrelated areas such as health care. Computer games are considered by many to be a fun by-product of information technology, but they can also do important work. Games can be great teachers, and CITRIS scientists are working with physicians to develop computer games that can help diagnose serious conditions such as Fragile X syndrome in children.
CITRIS also sponsors the monthly Art, Technology and Culture Colloquium is a lecture series to showcase cutting-edge artists, writers, curators, and scholars who address technology from a critical perspective and discuss issues at the intersection of aesthetic expression, emerging technologies, and cultural history. The free series has been running on the Berkeley campus for more than a decade; UC Santa Cruz has recently initiated a similar program that includes related graduate seminar courses.
