Building-to-Grid Technology & Test Bed
This project is helping to determine how to best implement building-to-grid communication with a “smart” electric grid, including evaluation of commercial issues, technical barriers to deployment, and technical analyses of smart grid technology. The project is developing an R&D roadmap for technological progress based on the initial evaluation. In order to evaluate specific smart grid strategies, CITRIS scientists are building and testing small-scale software and hardware models. The evaluation is taking place in a single building, the smallest scale that will provide meaningful information. The knowledge gained will help determine the feasibility of a large facility test bed with commercial and industrial loads that can provide detailed load information to the grid (subject to privacy constraints) to allow for better grid management. We have selected Cory Hall at UC Berkeley as the site for our small-scale evaluation work. Staff members at the physical plants of both Cory Hall and the campus are enthusiastic about the project.
