Job Summary

Under general direction of the Director, Online Strategy, Senior Developer leads a software engineering team that builds and maintains applications on behalf of the University Library, with impact across the Campus and in coordination with similar units across the University. Senior Developer helps recruit, leads, and manages a 2-4 person programmer and web designer unit that helps the Library achieve its aims of providing the greatest possible access to information to the greatest number of campus and university constituents, and aid the campus research and learning missions. Senior Developer helps architect software platforms that permit services integration, broad access through software interfaces (APIs), and works with digital product managers. Designs maintainable, high-performing, scalable software solutions through the use of exceptional software engineering practices.

Physical Demands

  • This position requires sitting or standing at a computer workstation for extended periods of time, operating and occasional moving computer and peripheral equipment; communication in person, telephone and e-mail, and other online services; reading program output and a variety of computer displays.
  • Lift/maneuver supplies and equipment of various weights up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment

  • 100% Fixed; Monday-Friday; 8:00am to 5:00pm. Work occasional flexible schedule including irregular shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs.
  • Position may reside primarily at either UC Berkeley or at UC Davis; travel to UC Davis is required. Remote work acceptable.
  • Must be able to adjust schedule to meet international conference calls, and occasional deadlines or emergency needs as necessitated by project launches, major events, and IT systems availability. Schedule to include occasional irregular shifts, weekends, holidays and evenings on short notice to meet operation needs.
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in CS/EE, Information Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years in web application development using Java, PHP, or Ruby using frameworks such as Spring, Symfony, or Rails.
  • 2+ years experience managing teams of 3 or more programmers.
  • Expert level skills in HTML and CSS.
  • Proficiency in SQL and relational databases such mySQL, Postgres, etc.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git or SVN.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum software development.
  • Experience with all stages of software development: requirements gathering, design, development, testing, and implementation.
  • Ability to utilize use case analysis to inform application design.
  • Familiarity with a test driven development.
  • Knowledge of object oriented programming techniques.
  • Demonstrated skills in analytical and creative problem solving.
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with other staff, departments and teams, and a willingness to ask for help.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Solr and Blacklight, or ElasticSearch.
  • Experience with front end web development using AngularJS, React, or similar JS frameworks
  • Experience with the Fedora open source repository.
  • Experience with NoSQL data sources such as MongoDB.
  • Experience implementing MVC and other architectural patterns.
  • Familiarity with SEO for text and visual content
  • Familiarity with mobile application development.
  • Familiarity with digital library technologies and standards
  • Ability to engineer the efficient processing of large scale media content (video transcoding, image processing, etc.).
  • Familiarity with library metadata standards (such as BIBFRAME, MODS, MARCXML, and Dublin Core).
  • Active contributor to open-source projects.
