Departmental Overview

The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Banatao Institute, citris-uc.org, is one of four visionary Institutes for Science and Innovation at the University of California established by Governor Gray Davis in 2000 to address large-scale societal problems through interdisciplinary research and new market applications.

For nearly 20 years, CITRIS has been advancing technology for the public good in such areas as sustainable energy; water and transportation systems; robotics and artificial intelligence; civic engagement; and health care. CITRIS supports faculty researchers and students from four UC campuses – Berkeley, Davis, Santa Cruz and Merced – through seed-grant funding, as well as staff, space and postdoc support for research activities. CITRIS offers laboratories and makerspaces, houses the CITRIS Foundry accelerator (citrisfoundry.org), and curates signature events throughout the year designed to foster dialogue in the tech community and beyond.

The Director of Development position is ideal for a fundraising professional who enjoys the challenge of building a new program alongside a dedicated team of colleagues.

Working closely with the CITRIS Director and Deputy Director, as well as the Director of Strategic Partnerships and faculty leaders, the Director of Development will identify funding opportunities and lead a program to engage individual donors who want to invest in the future of technology for social impact. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospects at a range of giving levels.

Responsibilities
30%  Plans, organizes, and implements fundraising projects and programs, including specific programs such as annual fund solicitations, events to raise CITRIS’s visibility among prospective donors and partners, and targeted engagement of major prospects. These programs must be developed with the CITRIS multi-campus ecosystem in mind.

30%  Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards major gift prospects and donors. Collaborates with colleagues and centers on all CITRIS campuses to advance coordinated strategies for donors and prospects who are interested in multiple campus activities. Make at least 10 – 15 substantive contacts per month (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship). Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly. May attend functions, meetings and serve on internal/external committees as a representative of CITRIS and the Banatao Institute.

20%  Provides analysis and information of complex results or activities, and makes recommendations to upper management for program changes or development of new programs as required. Participates in short and long-range strategic planning and develops strategies within existing policy guidelines. Helps to develop appropriate fundraising goals and ensures that they are met.

10%  Writes proposals for solicitation of individual and/or foundation prospects. Evaluates programs using financial feasibility studies and market research, including planning and evaluating annual solicitation programs and making recommendations for improvements.

10%  May oversee the work of professional and support staff involved in the implementation of multi-component fundraising programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations and public relations.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, et cetera.
  • Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
  • Advanced skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and securing gifts.
  • Advanced skill to meet predetermined goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, execution and evaluation.
  • Advanced analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
  • Skill to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the campus including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure, as well as a desire to learn about technology and its impact on society.
  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of the campus, including relevant issues for both the campus and higher education.
  • Knowledge of fundraising software.
  • Training in fundraising methods and best practices.
