Sutardja Dai Hall

CITRIS and the Banatao Institute - Sutardja Dai Hall

CITRIS at UC Berkeley is located at Sutardja Dai Hall (SDH). Approximately 141,000 square feet of space houses laboratories for collaborative research, offices, a 149-seat auditorium, conference rooms on each floor, state-of-the-art classrooms, and walkways that connect to the surrounding buildings.

The construction of the building was made possible in 2009 by generous gifts from UC Berkeley Engineering alumni Weili Dai, Sehat Sutardja, and Pantas Sutardja.

Located on the northeast corner of campus between Cory Hall and the Naval Architecture building, Sutardja Dai Hall (SDH) is seven stories of textured board form with light metal lines that complement the campus buildings around it. Sutardja Dai Hall was constructed using concrete with a high volume of coal fly ash, which releases significantly less CO2 into the atmosphere than the standard Portland cement.

Designed as a hub for innovators from different disciplines, the research zones are intermixed with collaborative space to promote interaction among CITRIS-affiliated faculty, students, startup companies, visiting scholars, industrial fellows, and staff from across the four CITRIS campuses.
