Building Emergency Plan (BEP)

The Sutardja Dai Hall Building Emergency Plan (BEP) is the building safety guide that outlines emergency procedures, contact information, maps of evacuation routes including the Emergency Assembly Area (EAA), and related building and campus emergency information. Cal/OSHA requires all occupants of Sutardja Dai Hall to have documented training on this BEP.

Safety Training

EHS 502 Workplace Safety Program training is the department safety document that outlines safety procedures, contact information, employee responsibilities and related administrative information. Cal/OSHA requires all CITRIS employees to have documented training on this injury and illness prevention program (IIPP).

Defibrillators and First-aid Kits

There are two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in Sutardja Dai Hall. One is located on the wall in the third-floor lobby next to the passenger elevators, and the other is mounted on the wall in the sixth-floor lobby outside Room 652. These devices are to be used in case of a cardiac emergency only, and an alarm will sound when the door is opened. Dial 911 from a building phone or (510) 642-3333 from a cell phone before using an AED. Instructions are provided in the packet attached to the device.

First-aid kits are located in the kitchen pantries on each floor and in the Shipping and Receiving Office on the second floor. A bloodborne pathogen clean-up kit is also provided with each first-aid kit to mitigate the spread of infections.

Computer Workstation Ergonomics

Employees who use their computers for four hours or more per day are encouraged to request an ergonomic evaluation of their computer workstation. University Health Services sponsors an ergonomics program with an interactive online workshop. Employees can use this workshop to evaluate their workstations from the convenience of their own computers.

Environment, Health and Safety Resources

Building Access

The Sutardja Dai Hall building at UC Berkeley is primarily a research facility. The outer entry doors are unlocked Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Research collaboratory areas are accessible by card key only. All building occupants must have either a Cal ID card key or another UCPD-issued card key (for non-UC employees) to gain access to the building outside of business hours. Some rooms are also managed with card key access during business hours. The University of California Police Department (UCPD) does not allow issuing of metal key overrides for doors on the card key system; for those areas, card keys are required.

These are the rooms and areas with card key access:

  • Exterior doors (after hours)
  • Fourth-floor Collaboratory (Room 450)
  • Fifth-floor Collaboratory (Room 550)
  • Nanofabrication Laboratory Offices (Room 520)
  • Nanofabrication Laboratory (Room 580)
  • Sixth-floor Collaboratory (Room 621)
  • Seventh-floor Collaboratory (Room 750)

Metal keys are issued for all other areas.

To request card key or metal key access to the building or specific areas, please fill out the Building Access Request Form. Card keys will be activated within two full business days after receiving your completed form, and metal key requests can take two to three weeks.

You can also request furniture keys to lock your desk drawers or overhead cabinets. Please specify your floor number and your desk number (the small, three-digit number located on the front edge of the desk) on your request form.

Doors with automatic closers should never be propped open unless they have been equipped with magnetic door devices to keep them open. These doors are fire-rated and must remain in the closed position in case of an emergency per the fire code.

Protection of Equipment and Personal Valuables

UCPD reports that most crimes on campus happen between 1–5 p.m., Monday through Friday, because criminals can more easily blend in with crowds of people or “hide in plain sight.” Help prevent theft by securing all your valuables and avoiding leaving areas unsecured. Please make sure that doors close securely behind you. Do not prop doors open, especially in unoccupied areas.

Other Steps To Prevent Theft

  • Do not open doors for people you do not know. Ask to which lab or office they belong, or inform them you will let the Facilities Office (Room 330A) know that they need access.
  • Report any lost keys or card keys to Facilities Office staff immediately. Card keys can be turned off in minutes to prevent unauthorized building or room access.
  • Turn in any keys found to the Facilities Office or CITRIS Reception desk inside the CITRIS Tech Museum.
  • Do not label keys with the area or room numbers that they operate.
  • Do not leave metal keys or card keys lying around, especially in public areas.
  • Do not loan keys to anyone.
  • Make sure to collect keys from all departing students or employees. All keys must be returned to inventory in the Facilities Office immediately.
