Description

The CITRIS in Europe meeting was held on June 20 and 21,  2006, in Helsinki, Finland.

On the first day, CITRIS faculty members gave technical talks, presenting their research in three key areas of research:

(1) Convergence of Future Communications Technologies;
(2) The Built Environment, Energy and Sustainability; and
(3) Services, Security, and Society.

The day ended with a networking reception.

On the second day of the meeting, a series of concurrent workshops were conducted by CITRIS faculty and researchers. The topics included the Built Environment, Energy, and Sustainability; IT in Health Care; and Embedded Systems and Software.

This meeting was held in concert with two others of great importance, both of which were also held in Finlandia Hall.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 21, our colleagues at the Berkeley Roundtable for International Economics (BRIE) and ETLA, the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, held a workshop focused on "Envisioning the IT Services Future" and "Implementing the Future." Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila gave the lunch keynote speech, and such notables as Stu Feldman of IBM; Erkki Ormala and Mikko Kosonen of Nokia; Jonathan Murray of Microsoft; and John Gage of Sun Microsystems also spoke at this event.

On Thursday, June 22, the US National Science Foundation and the EU/IST conducted another in a series of workshops contributing toward increased collaboration and joint road-mapping of research areas between the United States of America and the European Union on protection of critical infrastructures and on large-scale Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)-based control and real-time systems.

    Session Two: IT in Health Care

    Health information technology has the potential to not only help individual patients and doctors, but to also help achieve improvements in health system performance with respect to six goals: safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity. This workshop will report on innovative research on the use of health information technology to achieve such improvements in hospital, ambulatory care, and community settings. Please the following site for more information: IT in Health Care

    Session Three: Embedded Systems and Software

    Embedded systems interact digitally with the continuous world, and the software that drives these systems is nontrivial to produce. This session will report on the short and long term challenges in embedded systems, including technologies such as wireless sensor networks, methods for control and actuation, verification issues for composable systems, and programming methodologies that allow designs to scale up (and down).
