Description
The CITRIS in Europe meeting was held on June 20 and 21, 2006, in Helsinki, Finland.
On the first day, CITRIS faculty members gave technical talks, presenting their research in three key areas of research:
(1) Convergence of Future Communications Technologies;
(2) The Built Environment, Energy and Sustainability; and
(3) Services, Security, and Society.
The day ended with a networking reception.
On the second day of the meeting, a series of concurrent workshops were conducted by CITRIS faculty and researchers. The topics included the Built Environment, Energy, and Sustainability; IT in Health Care; and Embedded Systems and Software.
This meeting was held in concert with two others of great importance, both of which were also held in Finlandia Hall.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 21, our colleagues at the Berkeley Roundtable for International Economics (BRIE) and ETLA, the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, held a workshop focused on "Envisioning the IT Services Future" and "Implementing the Future." Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila gave the lunch keynote speech, and such notables as Stu Feldman of IBM; Erkki Ormala and Mikko Kosonen of Nokia; Jonathan Murray of Microsoft; and John Gage of Sun Microsystems also spoke at this event.
On Thursday, June 22, the US National Science Foundation and the EU/IST conducted another in a series of workshops contributing toward increased collaboration and joint road-mapping of research areas between the United States of America and the European Union on protection of critical infrastructures and on large-scale Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)-based control and real-time systems.

| 9:00 AM | Welcome and Introduction - Congress Wing, Hall B Prof. S. Shankar Sastry, Director, CITRIS |
| 9:15 AM | Parallel Workshop Sessions Session One: Built Environment and Sustainability A combination of events around energy, the environment and overall quality of the built environment create new research opportunities for our extended research community. This session will identify key social goals and bring new technology solutions. Metrics of performance in energy, water, safety and health will be considered.
Session Two: IT in Health Care Health information technology has the potential to not only help individual patients and doctors, but to also help achieve improvements in health system performance with respect to six goals: safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity. This workshop will report on innovative research on the use of health information technology to achieve such improvements in hospital, ambulatory care, and community settings. Please the following site for more information: IT in Health Care
Session Three: Embedded Systems and Software Embedded systems interact digitally with the continuous world, and the software that drives these systems is nontrivial to produce. This session will report on the short and long term challenges in embedded systems, including technologies such as wireless sensor networks, methods for control and actuation, verification issues for composable systems, and programming methodologies that allow designs to scale up (and down).
Session Four: Service Sciences Services account for the lion's share of GDP in developed and developing countries, but relatively little is known about service development, their evolution, and the factors that allow for services experimentation and innovation to thrive. This session will examine an emerging field of Services Science that targets research in services; explore emerging research in this field; and discuss areas for future research and collaboration.
Session Five: Soft Computing Soft computing is a platform for intelligent technologies which makes a difference in business and industry.
We will discuss the following four issues:
Session Six: Network Society Our panel will consider the promise, performance, and prospects for the Information Society. The current plan is to have three overview talks on the current state in Finland, the U.S., and the EU. The driving questions are why has so little happened, what could be done to increase the positive societal impact of ICT.
Session Seven: Mobile Media - Consumers as Producers One characteristic of mobile media is that consumers are also producers. Images, videos, and other media can be captured any time anywhere, published immediately from the phone or later, even remixed with other media, for audiences ranging from friends and family to the whole internet. We will discuss major current and emerging applications, looking at their commonality and diversity, and from this derive future possibilities.
Session Eight: Network and System Security This workshop is focused on all topics involving securing large scale systems and networks. Including: Network security at very high data rates, Securing wireless security, Critical infrastructure protection.
Session Nine: Wirless Networking Technology This workshop will address issues in wireless networking and the impact on handheld devices. We will discuss about the evolving wireless local area as well as wide area mesh networks, and their impact on commercial applications. With the advances in radio technologies and various standardization efforts, their impacts on the architectural revolution fo handheld devices, and added-value chain of OEMs&OEDs will be discussed.
