Communications Internship Opportunities for UC Berkeley Students

CITRIS Internship Program

If you are a motivated UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate student interested in visual communications, website production and design, content creation, multimedia and social media marketing, come work with our team this summer! We’re looking for skilled, motivated and creative interns to work with our communications team to share our exciting programs and success stories. We request a minimum of 20 hours a week during the summer with an opportunity to continue in the Fall semester as a Student Assistant. This is a paid internship at a competitive hourly rate.

CITRIS and the Banatao Institute is a multi-campus research institute headquartered at UC Berkeley. We help faculty and students develop new technologies that benefit society with a special focus on healthcare, robotics, energy, transportation, water, and civic engagement. Our “invention ecosystem” includes the CITRIS Invention Lab rapid prototyping facility, the CITRIS Foundry startup accelerator, and the CITRIS Tech for Social Good Program for students. Organization: CITRIS (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) and the Banatao Institute

Location: Sutardja Dai Hall, UC Berkeley

Scope: Minimum of 20 hours a week during the summer (with an opportunity to continue into the Fall 2017 semester at reduced hours as a Student Assistant).

Communications and Branding Assistant, Internship 

CITRIS is looking for a motivated UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate student interested in visual communications, content creation, branding, and social media marketing. This is a paid internship at a competitive hourly rate.

At CITRIS we have many exciting programs and success stories to share. Our audiences include undergraduate and grad students, faculty, media outlets (New York Times, WIRED, Fast Company), corporate partners, local and state legislators, and the campus community. The internship position plays a key role in creating engaging materials and content about cutting-edge research, new technologies, student innovation and startups, and multi-campus activities.

Organization: CITRIS (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) and the Banatao Institute

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

    • Marketing Material production: Produce communications materials for events, newsletters, invitations, promotions, executive presentations and more
    • Social Media: Help develop and implement social media plan and calendar for academic year
    • Content Creation: Draft and curate engaging content
    • Graphic Design: Conceptualize branding assets for programs, meetings and events including logos, infographics, brand guidelines and templates
    • Marketing Plan Development: Participate in brainstorming sessions to ensure marketing efforts are successful
    • Event Support: Assist team to execute marketing and logistics

Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • Currently enrolled in a BA, BS, or Masters program
  • Experience using social media tools (ex: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, HootSuite) to promote an event, program or organization is required
  • Experience writing and publishing in WordPress or other content management systems is required
  • Intermediate skill with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects) is required
  • Skill with the Google Apps suite, including Google Docs and Spreadsheets required
  • Skill with editing and troubleshooting basic HTML and CSS preferred
  • Experience with CRM database software such as Salesforce is a plus

Communication Skills:

  • Experience writing or editing content for web, print, and social media required
  • Experience managing one or more social media accounts for an organization required
  • Strong visual sense for typography, layout, and color is required
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail required
  • Excellent listening, synthesis, and writing skills required
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and keep others updated on project status
  • Interest in new marketing tools and trends is a plus
  • Possess strong time management skills and be able to prioritize tasks when given clearly defined goals and objectives
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Web Development and Design Assistant, Internship

The internship position will play a key role in improving our website, launching new sites and tracking web performance. This is a paid internship at a competitive hourly rate.

  • Troubleshooting: Monitor issues with display and functionality
  • Performance Tracking: Monitor performance metrics
  • Marketing Plan Development: Participate in brainstorming sessions for website improvements and new ideas

Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • Currently enrolled in a BA, BS or Masters program in Computer Science or related field
  • Advanced knowledge of WordPress is required
  • Intermediate experience in current web standard, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery and web browser capabilities is required
  • Strong understanding of PHP back-end development is required
  • Experience with UX principles and practices is required
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for front-end and back-end issues required
  • Experience managing one or more websites for an organization desired
  • Solid skills in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator are preferred
  • Experience with Google Analytics or other web performance tracking tools is a plus
  • Experience with basic search engine optimization (SEO) is a plus

Creative Skills:

  • Strong design sense, and critiquing ability, to identify well-designed sites and web applications
  • Interest in trends and best practices for online communications
  • Strong visual sense for typography, layout, and color is required
