Sector definitions are based on the IPCC Common Reporting Framework used by the UNFCCC (IPCC 1996b[1]), with large segments grouped together as follows:
1) Electricity & Heat, including:
a. Public Plants (electricity, heat, CHP) (IPCC category 1A1a)
b. Autoproducers (electricity, heat, CHP) (IPCC category 1A)
c. Other Energy Industries (fossil fuels (IPCC category 1A1b,c)
2) Manufacturing & Construction (IPCC category 1A2)
3) Transportation, including:
a. Domestic Transportation (IPCC category 1A3)
b. International Bunkers (IPCC category 1A3ai, 1A3di)
4) Other Combustion (IPCC category 1A4)
5) Land Use Change & Forestry (IPCC category 5)
6) Other, including:
a. Fugitive Emissions from natural gas flaring/venting (IPCC category 1B2c)
b. Industrial Processes: cement (IPCC category 2A1)
The IPCC categories not listed above apply to the non-CO2 gases, and hence are not included in the Gas-CAP data.
For more detailed definitions of the above categories, see pp.15-20 of WRI CAIT: Greenhouse Gas Sources & Methods, Feb. 2008.
